Netflix Announces New Period Piece Titled Persuasion
After the immense success that Bridgerton has brought Netflix, it does not come as a surprise that they are creating more period piece projects for their site.
What is Persuasion about?
Persuasion, an adaptation of a famous Jane Austen novel, is about a second chance at love for Anne Elliot and Captain Frederick Wentworth, who had lost each other eight years prior due to their differences in class.
Anne Elliot is the main protagonist, a woman who has grown to question her past decisions and where they have led her in life. She wants more in life, but fears that her choices have solidified her future path.
Anne lives with her polished and seemingly perfect family, who is actually on the brink of bankruptcy. Mr. Elliot, the future heir after Anne’s father, comes to town with a plot to get the family fortune early. And while Anne is dealing with her wild family, her former love Captain Frederick Wentworth is suddenly back in town, leaving her to many difficult choices.
Full of charm and wit, this period piece was written to discuss themes of class differences, love triangles, and whether or not you should follow your heart.
In this adaptation, the trailer shows Anne Elliot breaking the fourth wall and speaking directly to the audience, showing that this film may include some unique characteristics and dynamics.
Who is involved in this movie?
Dakota Johnson (known for her lead role in the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy) will be starring as Anne Elliot, and Cosmo Jarvis will play Captain Wentworth. Carrie Cracknell is making her debut as a film director, and was previously known for her directing in British theatre, which has earned her work several Tony awards.
When will Persuasion be on Netflix?
Viewers will be able to watch the movie on July 15. Production had begun last May, so we know that there has been a considerable amount of time put into the creation of this movie.
The movie was filmed in Bath, England during the spring and summer. Jane Austen herself used to live in Bath during the early 1800’s, so the location choice just feels right. The adaptation is said to have a more modern feel when it comes to dialogue, but costuming suggests that the directors are keeping the story’s time period themes as accurate as possible.
