Bindi and Her Warrior
Bindi Irwin honored her father with a sweet tribute to commemorate the 16th anniversary of his death. You may remember Bindi from her youth because she was often side by side with her dad, “The Crocodile Hunter,” Steve Irwin. She posted this message to her social media, “Grandpa Crocodile, I know you would’ve been the most incredible grandfather because you were such an extraordinary dad. Thank you for being an amazing guardian angel for Grace.” This message was the caption to a photo of her as a child holding a baby gator and sitting with her dad.
Steve Irwin was an Australian zookeeper, environmentalist, and wildlife expert. He was also a television personality for his wildlife documentary series, The Crocodile Hunter, that he co-hosted with his wife Terri Irwin. The series aired from 1996 – 2007. The couple also had a few other series, Croc Files, The Crocodile Hunter Diaries, and New Breed Vets.
While filming a documentary in Australia in 2006, Irwin was struck in the chest by a stingray. He died on September 4, 2006. His death made national news as fans mourned the loss of such an extraordinary person. At the time their daughter, Bindi Irwin was 8 and son, Robert Irwin was 2.
Since then Bindi has definitely grown up. She is now a wife and a mother. At 24 years old, Bindi is married to Chandler Powell (a professional wakeboarder), whom she married in a small private ceremony in Australia on March 25, 2020. During the height of the pandemic the couple opted to change their original wedding plans and wed in a small intimate ceremony to follow health restrictions that prohibited large gatherings for celebrations at the time.
Exactly one year later on March 25, 2021, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Grace Warrior Irwin Powell. Bindi shared this about her daughter’s name, “Grace is named after my great-grandmother and relatives in Chandler’s family dating back to the 1700s. Her middle names, Warrior Irwin, are a tribute to my dad and his legacy as the most incredible Wildlife Warrior.”
September 4, also happens to be a special day in Australia and Bindi’s brother, Robert, had a special tribute, “It’s Father’s Day today in Australia, and I am sending my love to those who are missing their dad today. I cherish all the good times with my dad and feel grateful to be able to keep his memory and legacy alive.”
Terri Irwin, posted family pictures and captioned them with, “The part of Steve’s life that he loved the most was being a dad. He would be so very proud.” On the 14th anniversary of Steve’s death Terri particularly struggled because the couple was married for 14 years before his unfortunate passing. On that day she wrote, “This is a particularly poignant moment in time for me. Today marks 14 years since I lost Steve, after 14 wonderful years of marriage. I feel that I have a choice: celebrate love or struggle with grief. I choose love.”
