Kelly Osbourne And Her Win Against Gestational Diabetes
Pregnant Kelly Osborne shared that she has been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. This is after observing symptoms like swollen ankles and weight gain in her third trimester.
At first, the reality star attributed her symptoms to her increased cravings for sugar. Still, it turned out that she had gestational diabetes, which impacted her pregnancy and her baby’s health. Her sugar cravings motivated the TV personality to collaborate with the No Sugar Company and even celebrate National No Sugar Day this October 3.
Kelly, at first, thought that her worsening condition was due to something she had done. As she grew into her third trimester, she had no other cravings aside from sugar, and then she realized that what was taking her down was her consumption of sugary drinks and juice.
The 37-year-old daughter of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne further explained that although the juices she drinks were fresh-pressed, there was still too much sugar on them. With her symptoms and ensuing diagnoses, she was forced to take a step back and look deeper into her overall diet. This was when she realized and decided that she needed to restrict her carbohydrate intake and eliminate sugar from her diet.
For any pregnant woman, this is not easy, especially with hormones and cravings in full throttle. The sacrifices were not easy, admitted Kelly, but she did experience firsthand how cutting back on sugar helped her. At first, she shared that she experienced headaches from the additional unwanted shock her body was going through—a sort of withdrawal symptom from the lack of sugar.
But all sacrifices are worth it because changing her overall diet helped her steadily eliminate her symptoms, and it does have plenty of benefits in tow, not just for her but also for her baby.
One of these benefits that Kelly spoke about was with regard to her pregnancy acne. The ex-Fashion Police host stated that cutting on the sugar caused the acne to go away. She also shared that her now sugar-free diet also caused her to stop wearing compression socks. Kelly is glad about her decision because she now sleeps better and has more energy despite being heavily pregnant.
According to the CDC, gestational diabetes affects a mere 2 to 10% of pregnancies, which happens when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin. And most importantly, gestational diabetes is not the mother’s fault, although her lifestyle and diet can influence and increase her risk.
Now, Kelly, having experienced firsthand the benefits of minimizing sugar intake, is motivated to advocate for other pregnant moms to make the necessary changes in their diet for themselves and their baby’s sake.
Kelly’s pregnancy challenges are something she openly shares with the public. She also recently guested on Red Table Talk, where she shared her decision not to breastfeed her child after delivery because she will still be under medication.
The Dancing with the Stars alum is carrying her first child with partner Sid Wilson, 45, a member of the metal band Slipknot. The couple made their relationship public via Instagram last January and announced they were expecting around May.
