Velma’s Sexuality in Scooby Doo Has Been Confirmed
For a long time, fans of the franchise and members of the LGBTQ+ community have theorized that the witty, all-orange-wearing sleuth is a lesbian. Recently, this theory has been confirmed by Velma herself and the woman who plays her.
A clip from Trick or Treat Scooby Doo! Has been released, and gone viral, as Velma shows a romantic interest in another woman. She meets Coco Diablo, who is a costume designer, and all the elements of a rom-com ensue; the slow-mo, angelic music, you name it.
When Velma lays eyes on the costume designer, text appears on the screen as her glasses strategically point out her redeeming qualities, “incredible glasses,” “good with animals,” “amazing turtleneck,” along with saying that she is “obviously brilliant.”
As Velma’s cheeks flush and her glasses start to fog up, she says what Velma is known for saying, “Jinkies!,” in a smitten tone. In another clip, while walking alongside Daphne, Velma tries to play it cool, but eventually gives it up and says she’s “crushing big time.”
Of course, all of this has sent Twitter into an excited frenzy. Especially when Velma’s crush calls her “the cute one.” Amongst the happiness of fans, Hayley Kiyoko, who played Velma Dinkley in 2008 and 2009, shares her support and joy. “I remember booking Velma in 2008,” she said, “It was my first big role in a movie. I also remember thinking, ‘I wonder if they know they hired a lesbian as Velma’ here we are, 14 years later… love you all so much.”
Fans have theorized Velma’s sexuality for years, with creators of the show hinting at it. In June of 2020, producer Tony Cervone posted an Instagram picture of Velma and her past enemy wearing pride colors together. He wrote, “Marcie and Velma- Mystery Incorporated. I obviously don’t represent every version of Velma Dinkley, but I am one of the key people that represents this one. We made our intentions as clear as we could ten years ago. Most of our fans got it. To those that didn’t, I suggest you look closer. There’s no new news here.”
The same year, the show’s director, James Gunn said that he wanted to make the character “explicitly gay” but executives at the studio weren’t fully on board with his idea. Trick or Treat Scooby Doo! will be available for viewing on October 16 through HBO Max, and fans will get to see how Velma’s romance plays out, along with the usual antics that come with her squad.
The representation is an innocent statement to children that it’s okay to like whoever they like, something that most other people did not have during childhood. And it’s sure to rack in viewers, as support has been abundant.
