Guess Who’s Back in Action?
Make way for Cameron Diaz. On Wednesday, Jamie Foxx tweeted a recorded audio call between him and Diaz where she sounded nervous about coming out of retirement. You could hear Diaz’s voice telling Foxx, “I’m so anxious right now. I’m, like, pacing the room. I feel excited, but I don’t know how to do this, ya know?”
But that’s only until star quarterback and comeback king Tom Brady joins the call to give her some tips!
Later, Netflix released a press release announcing a new original movie that will be called Back in Action starring Foxx and Diaz in lead roles. While we don’t have many details about the project so far, we do know that the film will be an action-comedy, a genre where Diaz has performed extensively throughout her career. The movie will be directed by Seth Gordon, who has also taken up the roles of writer and producer. The filmmaker reportedly co-wrote the script with Brendan O’Brien, one of the writers of the 2014 film Neighbors (released as Bad Neighbours in some countries).
This will be Diaz’s first venture since she last starred in the remake of Annie back in 2014, which coincidentally also starred Foxx. This is their third outing as a lead pair. Their first appearance together was 1999’s Any Given Sunday.
Back in 2018, Diaz announced that she was retiring as an actress. Diaz revealed that stepping away from the limelight helped her do things she didn’t have time for before, including meeting her husband Benji Madden. She admitted last year that her primary reason for retiring was she couldn’t imagine being on a movie set for 16 hours a day since becoming a mother in 2020.
At the time, she hinted at the possibility of making a comeback in the industry. In an interview, she was quoted saying, “Will I ever make a movie again? I’m not looking to, but will I? I don’t know. I have no idea. Maybe. Never say never!”
The Charlie’s Angel actress starred in numerous roles over the course of her career, gaining prominence as one of the best actresses of her generation. This is why her decision to retire from the industry back in 2018 left many shocked. With her involvement in this new feature film, however, it looks like she’s coming back to rock the big screen and we’re only too pleased to welcome her.
After the official announcement, Diaz posted on her Instagram story: “@iamjamiefoxx only you could get me back in action!! I can’t frickin wait it’s gonna be a blast!”
While production has yet to announce a release date, the news has fans excited to see her back in Hollywood after an 8-year hiatus. Plot details haven’t been revealed but Foxx confirmed that production will start sometime this year. Foxx will be executive producing the action-comedy flick alongside Datari Turner, Brendan O’Brien, and Mark McNair.
