Madonna Documentary Scrapped Despite Julia Garner Going Through Grueling Audition Process
Breaks have been put on the much-anticipated biopic of the legendary singer Madonna. The project the 64-year-old was working towards in collaboration with Universal Pictures has been put to sleep.
Speculations about the fate of the documentary started raving the moment the iconic singer announced her upcoming world tour. Since publicizing the world tour in an announcement on January 17, tickets have sold out across cities like New York, Paris, London, and many more.
Following that, fans believe the tour, which will begin in July and last till December 2023, is why the documentary production was shut down. However, the growing concern of many is directed toward the “grueling” audition process for the film.
The concerns came after insiders revealed to news outlets that the auditions for the documentary were extensive and extreme. According to insiders, auditions included 11 hours of choreography sessions with Madonna’s choreographer.
Many have shared their concerns following information that actress Julia Garner emerged as the lead to play Madonna after beating Oscar nominee Florence Pugh, actress Emma Laird and the Euphoria star Alexa Demie, and a host of other buzzy names in Hollywood.
In 2020, Madonna announced her decision to make a film that spans her musical career. Speaking to Variety then, the Material Girl singer said: “No one’s going to tell my story but me…I’ve had an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film.”
“It was also a preemptive strike because a lot of people were trying to make movies about me. Mostly misogynistic men,” the world-class singer told Variety.
In June 2022, news confirmed that actress Julia Garner, who has successfully played the fake German heiress, Anna Delvey in Netflix original Inventing Anna, has been selected to play Madonna in the documentary. Madonna was also fully invested in the creation process as she co-wrote two script drafts that encompassed her personal life and career.
Insiders familiar with Madonna say the icon remains committed to someday making a film about her life. Despite that, the “grueling” audition process has given a lot of fans concerns. Many are interested in getting a documentary about what Madonna’s recruitment process for her documentary was like.
Many have taken to Twitter to express their thoughts and concerns about the documentary audition. A tweeter said: “Now they’ve scrapped the biopic Gruelling Madonna Bootcamp documentary MUST HAPPEN!”
Another said: “Julia Garner won Madonna Biopic Bootcamp for no reason.”
Following the shutdown of the documentary, Variety reached out to representatives of Madonna, Julia, and Universal Pictures, but they all declined comments.
