Austin Butler Surprises Fans By Speaking With Elvis’ Memphis Drawl During His Golden Globes Acceptance Speech
Anaheim, California-born Austin Butler’s Golden Globes acceptance speech has drawn a wave of reactions from fans who could still trace a Memphis drawl two years after the actor filmed the movie, Elvis.
The reactions started coming when the 31-year-oldactor started his speech by saying, “I just want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press for this honor.” Fans immediately clocked that the actor was still using a Memphis drawl from a 2-year-old movie.
The movie in question is the biopic of the Rock and Roll legend Elvis Presley, directed by Australian film director Baz Luhrmann.
The Elvis star, Austin, was excited as he scooped the award for Best Actor–Motion Picture Drama in the movie. However, the fans’ focus was quickly redirected to the different sound from his voice which is traceable to that of his character in the movie.
Some of the reactions from the fans are:
“Austin Butler’s voice is WILD that cannot be real” and “When is Austin Butler going to switch his voice back to normal?”
Someone else added: “Austin Butler still stuck in his Elvis voice” as another fan said: “austin butler using this elvis voice for his golden globe win…girl i’m losing my mind and busting out laughing.”
A fourth fan wrote: “Austin Butler has one more chance to shut the Elvis voice off I swear to god” while a fifth made mention to Austin needing exorcism to get rid of the voice saying, “Okay now who is gonna award Austin Butler an exorcist to get this Elvis voice outta him.”
Adding to the fan’s reaction, fellow California-born singer Bethany Cosentino wrote: “Does Austin Butler realize he’s from Anaheim?”
Since completing filming for the biopic, Austin has previously talked publicly about the effects of playing the Elvis character. He admitted that he “lost touch” with his own personality.
The Elvis star went on with the Memphis drawl, saying, “I also want to say to my fellow nominees, you have turned in the most beautiful profound work, and I am so honored and proud to be listed among you.”
As he went on with his acceptance speech and acknowledged director Baz Luhrmann, fans continued dropping in their two cents concerning the Elvis accent that has remained almost two years after filming wrapped up.
However, a fan jumped to his defense, saying, “the most Hollywood thing you can do is create an accent and stick to it.”
Austin has also previously admitted that his commitment to perfecting his role in the movie made him spend three years prepping in Australia without seeing his family.
