Andy Cohen Says Bestie John Mayer Is In Touch With His Emotions
Amid questions about how Andy Cohen and John Mayer’s bond is so closely-knit, Andy is providing some insights into their “unlikely friendship” and sharing some of what sustains their friendship.
The talk show host told Bruce Bozzi during a Wednesday appearance on Table for Two with Bruce Buzzi that his friendship with the singer is made solid by the fact that he is in touch with his emotions.
“John Mayer is someone who is very in touch with his emotions. He very quickly in our friendship started saying, ‘You know what, I gotta tell you something — I love you,” he said.
The 54-year-old added that John is the type to say things that “straight guys aren’t necessarily supposed to say,” like “I love you and I cherish you and I cherish our friendship.”
John and Andy’s friendship has gone on for ages after they ran into each other with a mutual friend in New York City. The trio started to go shopping together and Andy, who did not realize John’s celebrity status, only knew he had been hanging out with “the John Mayer” after he realized they were always followed by paparazzi.
Their bond was solidified by their shared love of American rock band the Grateful Dead, whom the two took a bromantic road trip to see in 2015.
Describing their friendship in an article for Entertainment Weekly, Andy wrote, “John Mayer and I have what some would consider an unlikely friendship. He’s one of our greatest living guitarists, and I’m regarded as the dude that stirs the s— on late-night TV.”
“We do have one thing that bonds us: our love of the Grateful Dead. So when the band did five shows this summer — their last ever — we used their Santa Clara, California, gigs as an excuse to take a road trip and bro it up,” he added.
In February, during John’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, the guitarist honored his talk show host friend with a sweet speech.
“Andy really is the world’s friend. I’ve walked with him down city streets and been on FaceTime with him as he goes about his day, and each and every time he’s recognized, he’s said ‘hello’ to just like a friend,” the 45-year-old said, adding that Andy is a friend he can count on.
Publicly declaring his love for Andy, John described Andy as “a brilliant human being, a hilarious cohort, a loving son, and brother.”
Aside from speaking about their friendship in interviews, Instagram posts, and during speeches, the two occasionally share clips from their hangout sessions on their social media account.
