Christina Applegate’s 2023 SAG Awards Might Be Her “Last” Awards Show As She Braves Red Carpet With Walking Cane
On February 26, Christina Applegate, 51, arrived at the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City, Los Angeles. Beside the actress was her 12-year-old daughter, Sadie Grace LeNoble, who was also her plus-one to the Critics Choice awards earlier in January.
The Dead To Me star, nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series, lost her category to Hacks star Jean Smart.
Following the awards night, the Emmy-winning actress, who has been struggling with multiple sclerosis since 2021, got candid with LA Times.
“It’s my last awards show as an actor, probably, so it’s kind of a big deal,” Christina told the outlet.”
Explaining further, the actress stated, “Right now, I couldn’t imagine getting up at 5 am and spending 12 to 14 hours on a set; I don’t have that in me at this moment.”
Currently, she is considering “next steps” in the movie industry, such as voice-over actor role, producing, and development, all to “make some cash to make sure that my daughter’s fed and we’re homed.”
The Bad Moms actress was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis while shooting the third and final season of the Netflix show, Dead To Me. She explained to the publication that shooting the show’s final season was a struggle, “but most of that wreck would take place in my trailer by myself.”
The actress said production took a 5-month break shortly after her diagnosis so she could receive treatments. Even though filming resumed in early 2022 and ended in February 2022, she explains that it was still a challenge.
“There were times I’d break down on set and be like, ‘I can’t, we have to take a break, I need a half-hour, and everyone was so loving that it was OK,” she shared with the outlet.
It’s not the first time the seasoned actress has dealt with a major health crisis. In 2008, she battled breast cancer, which led to a double mastectomy. In 2017, she had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed.
Christina has had a long career in Hollywood despite her health condition. Since joining the Screen Actors Guild in 1975, she has won a Primetime Emmy award from seven nominations, four Golden Globe nominations, and a Tony award.
On November 14, 2022, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Celebrating the event, the Married With Children actress thanked her friends for helping her through her condition and her 12-year-old, whom she described as “the most important person in this world.”
