Emotional Christina Applegate Gives Farewell Appearance at SAG Awards
Christina Applegate attended the 2023 SAG awards last Sunday night with her 12-year-old daughter Sadie Grace LeNoble on a bittersweet note. This year’s ceremony may be the actress’ last awards show as an actor because of her battle with multiple sclerosis.
Her black cane only served as a reminder of her predicament when she arrived at the venue, the Fairmont Century Plaza in California with her pre-teen. It had a noticeably strong message on it, with FU MS written at the bottom. The cane also featured Sadie’s name beside a bedazzled heart.
For her SAG appearance, Emmy winner Christina, nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series, wore a glamorous black velvet gown inspired by a tuxedo silhouette. She paired her outfit with red lipstick and styled her hair in loose waves.
Sadie was there to support her mother and was seen holding her mother’s hand; she was wearing a structured black blazer and a pair of Dr Martens boots with bright laces.
Christina did not win in her nominated category, and Jean Smart took the prize for her role in HBO’s Hacks, where she plays Deborah Vance. Despite not winning, Christina was seen cheering enthusiastically and throwing up her arms in glee when Jean was announced as the winner.
During Christina’s interview with Los Angeles Times earlier this month, the Married With Child star mentioned that the SAG Awards will be her last awards show as an actor and that it was a big deal for her.
She explained, “Right now, I couldn’t imagine getting up at 5 a.m. and spending 12 to 14 hours on a set; I don’t have that in me.”
The 51-year-old actress was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in August 2021. This was while she was shooting for the third and last season of Dead to Me, a Netflix hit show. As Jen Harding, the cynical widow, her role in this series paved the way for her SAG nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series.
Although Christina will stay out of the limelight, she will continue working on her voiceover projects. She funnily shared that she is doing tons of voiceovers to make some money to ensure they have a home and that her daughter is well cared for.
Dead To Me has been on the air for almost three years since its premiere in 2019, and its final episode aired last November. The story revolves around Christina’s character Jen who, after becoming a widow, meets another widow named Judy Hale played by Linda Cardellini during a grief counseling session.
That unlikely meeting paves the way for a beautiful friendship which leads to Jen incorporating Judy into her and her children’s lives.
During one of her conversations with the LA Times, Christina shared how she was a wreck while filming the series because every day had become a struggle thanks to her MS symptoms. She would usually give in to everything her body was going through when she was alone in her trailer.
The production of the series took a five-month break so Christina could undergo some treatment to better manage her medical condition. Christina was also appreciative of all the people who she worked with because there were instances when she’d break down and ask for time to compose herself, and everyone working on the series would happily comply.
