Jamie Lee Curtis Takes Home Oscar Award For Best Supporting Actress, Gives Emotional Speech
After decades of working on sets and featuring on screens, Jamie Lee Curtis finally won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress on Sunday night. The huge win came from the 64-year-old’s supporting role as Deirdre Beaubeirdre in Everything Everywhere All At Once, which stars her alongside Ke Huy Quan, Michelle Yeoh, and Stephanie Hsu, who was also nominated in the same category.
Aside from co-star Stephanie, other nominees of the category include Angela Bassett for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Kerry Condon for The Banshees Of Inisheerin, and Hong Chau for The Whale.
As Jamie accepted the golden statuette on the Oscar stage at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California, she had an emotional speech to give.
In her speech, she acknowledged her late actor parents, Tony Curtis, and Janet Leigh, who were nominated for the award but never won.
“And my mother and my father were both nominated for Oscars in different categories – I just won an Oscar!” she exclaimed.
Janet Leigh was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role in the 1960 psychological horror thriller film Psycho. She died in 2004. Tony Curtis got his nomination back in 1959 for the role he played in the 1958 film The Defiant Ones. The late icon, who died in 2010, was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
Jamie’s speech also sent appreciation to her husband, Christopher Guest, her sister Kelly and her daughters, Annie and Ruby. She then thanked creatives that she collaborated with to make her acting a success.
The veteran actress then went on to thank her fans and supporters. “To all of the people who have supported the genre movies that I’ve made for all these years, the thousands and hundreds of thousands of people, we just won an Oscar together!” she stated, all the while emotional.
Prior to her Oscar win, Jamie bagged nominations and an award for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once, including a Screen Actors Guild award from last month. She has also won multiple awards for other roles in the past. But this would be her first Academy Award nomination and win.
While Jamie’s win meets happiness in the hearts of her fans who believe she has been robbed of an Academy Award for too long, there are people who feel Angela Bassett outdid the Halloween actress with her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The debate sparked on social media comes out of Angela’s reaction when Jamie was named the winner.
According to reports, the announcement of Jamie’s win was met with a sour face and refusal to clap by Angela. While other fellow nominees applauded Jamie as she mounted the stage, Bassett gave off a countenance that showed her disappointment at losing the plaque.
