Heath Ledger And Michelle Williams’ Daughter, Matilda, Plan To Take A Gap Year In Australia To Bond With Her Father’s Family
How time flies! Matilda, the daughter of the late Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams, is already 17 and almost graduating from high school. Matilda is reportedly planning and convincing her mom so that she can spend an extended holiday with her father’s family in Australia.
The teen’s plan boils down to her wanting to get to know her father’s side of the family before going to college.
Recall that her Oscar-nominated actress Michelle raised Matilda in the US after Heath’s death. Her paternal grandparents still live in Western Australia, and they are hopeful about the possibility of their granddaughter spending time with them. Back then, the grandparents desired to see more of Matilda, who they affectionately call their “Little New Yorker.”
The trip to Australia is meant to help Matilda better understand the other side of her heritage as she prepares to graduate from high school in a few months. According to New Idea, the low-profiled young adult is keen and determined to head to Australia during her gap year.
A source close to the mother-and-daughter tandem shared that Matilda wanted to spend time with her father’s family before she started university and that when she started her tertiary education, there might no longer be time to get to know her family in Australia.
In 2008, Sally, Heath’s mother, shared with Us Weekly that they would visit Matilda the following week to see how much she’s grown. Her grandmother mentioned that they were constantly communicating with Michelle and that they’d made it a point to visit their grandchild as frequently as possible.
Matilda’s aunt on her father’s side, Kate, also shared how much she enjoyed sharing stories about Heath growing up with her niece. To fully understand herself, she thinks Matilda must have a solid grasp of her origins.
Michelle is understood to have reservations about her daughter’s plans, claiming that Australia is just too far. And Matilda understands her mother’s hesitations. Heath’s only child grew up away from the limelight, and Michelle was keen on keeping her low profile because this is what she and Heath agreed on before his untimely passing.
The high school student with a very uncanny resemblance to her father was just two years old when Heath died at 28 after drinking a fatal cocktail of drugs. After his death, Michelle went on a Hollywood hiatus and moved to upstate New York, hoping to provide her daughter with a sane home environment. They moved from Brooklyn to the country and led a regular American lifestyle for six years before returning to the Big Apple.
Michelle was in a relationship with the Brokeback Mountain star from 2004 to 2007. Michelle married Thomas Kail, a theater director, in 2020 and shares two children with him. It was one of Michelle’s wishes to provide Matilda with siblings close to her age that she could grow up with and share life with.
Although making this dream a reality was a little delayed, Michelle is still happy that Matilda will not be alone and that she has two siblings to turn to who would love and appreciate her.
