Katie Holmes Is Not Happy With The Reality That Sexual Assault Is An Understood Secret Among The Women Population
Dawson’s Creek alumna Katie Holmes recently tackled one very sensitive topic—sexual assault—in a powerful and eye-opening interview with Glamour last week. She also discussed her deep love for Suri, her daughter, and how she perceives herself as not sexy.
The 44-year-old actress was promoting her new film, Rare Objects, which she also directed, when these topics and her rise to fame were discussed.
In Rare Objects, a young woman named Benita, who Julia Mayorga plays, is assaulted. Katie Holmes discussed the process of shooting that very delicate, sensitive, but core moment. She mentioned that one of her top priorities was the effect of the scene on Benita.
Katie revealed that “it is, unfortunately, [sexual assault] is an understood secret among women, so we don’t have to share too much to know what we’re talking about. And that was really a difficult one to shoot because I just needed her face.”
The American actress had to remind her actors during the scene how critical their faces and emotions were. She also admitted that after that scene was shot, everyone was pretty shaken up.
The movie Rare Objects is based on a novel by Kathleen Tessaro, released under the same name in 2016.
The book’s time and setting were right after the Great Depression, but Katie’s movie version took place in modern-day New York City.
Aside from the pivotal assault, the movie’s core was about the life of Benita as she makes a Herculean effort to rebuild her life. The young woman working in an antique store struggles as different people from her past start resurfacing in her present.
During the conversation with Glamour, Katie also offered a glimpse of what life is like with her family, especially with her 16-year-old daughter, Suri, who was reported to have started submitting college applications.
Suri is Katie’s and Tom Cruise’s husband, but the young woman primarily grew up on her mother’s side. As a mom, Katie disclosed that she needed to protect Suri from the get-go, not only because she was her only child but also because she has been in the public eye since she was young.
She shared how grateful she is that she is Suri’s mother because she described her daughter as nothing but an incredible person.
Katie was glamorous on her Glamour cover, where she was photographed wearing different outfits and captured with various degrees of emotion. Her new movie is set to be released in theaters and on demand this Friday.
Katie has continuously expanded her horizons because, aside from directing Rare Objects, she also co-wrote the script, played a producer, and appeared in one of the supporting roles.
Joining Julia Mayorga in the movie are Gina Jun and Derek Luke. Julie, in particular, was known to be highly excited about working with a Batman Begins alum as her director and co-actress.
