Arnold Schwarzenegger Reflects On Past Marriage With Ex-Wife Maria Shriver
Arnold Schwarzenegger recently sat down for a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss his personal life and reflect on his past and current relationships. The 75-year-old Terminator star revealed that he definitely still loves his ex-wife Maria Shriver.
Arnold and Maria, 67, were married in 1986, but their marriage came to an end in 2011 when it was revealed that Arnold had fathered a son named Joseph Baena, now 25, with their household employee, Mildred Baena. The divorce was finalized in 2021, and since then, the former couple has worked together to establish a strong co-parenting relationship for the sake of their four children.
In the interview, when asked if he missed being married, the iconic actor and former governor of California responded with a resolute “No.” He admitted that the divorce was very difficult at the beginning but emphasized that he has moved on. He then took some time to proudly acknowledge his current girlfriend, Heather Milligan, a successful physical therapist, and expressed his love for her.
Despite the end of their marriage, Arnold also spoke fondly of Maria, expressing his admiration for her. He described her as a close friend and emphasized that they have remained on good terms. Schwarzenegger commended their joint efforts in raising their children, stating that they have celebrated numerous occasions together.
“Even though we had this drama, we did Easter together, Mother’s Day together, the Christmases together, all birthdays — everything together,” he stated.
The Commando star even humorously remarked that he and his ex wife should receive an award for how well they handled their divorce, particularly for its minimal impact on their children. He attributed the sweetness and kindness in their children to Shriver and credited himself for instilling discipline and a strong work ethic in them.
In his words: “’If there’s Oscars for how to handle divorce, Maria and I should get it for having the least amount of impact on the kids. The sweetness and kindness you see in them, that’s from my wife. The discipline and work ethic is from me.”
Arnold, who has no plans to retire soon, has a documentary, Arnold, set to be released on Netflix on June 7. According to him, it will provide an opportunity for him to reflect on his past and the impact of his actions on his family. The trailer for the documentary shows Schwarzenegger expressing remorse for the pain he caused his family and acknowledging that his failures will always be remembered alongside his successes.
