Simon Cowell Admits Seeing A Therapist For A Year After His Obsession With His Show’s Ratings Started Driving Him Crazy
Simon Cowell has been honest about seeing a therapist one year ago to help him manage and deal with all the stress he has been under due to work.
The 63-year-old pop mogul mentioned that he wished he had consulted one 20 years ago, not recently. He also revealed that asking for help is not something to be ashamed of.
Simon, who created several hit shows, including The X-Factor and America’s Got Talent, admitted that one of the most significant stressors was his obsession with how his TV shows were faring. The rating has started to drive him nuts.
The Britain’s Got Talent judge, while talking at the Advertising Week Europe event, mentioned that the industry was very stressful and that having the help of a therapist was such a huge help.
He revealed, “Having an outlet once a week where you can just talk in what I call a safe space and just talk about how you’re feeling and no-one’s judging you… I would say to anybody, just do it.”
The mogul further shared, “It’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s like exercising your brain in the same way you exercise your body.”
He also took the time to commend his therapists, sharing that they were great people and thoroughly trained for their jobs. Simon was amazed at how his therapist was able to help him identify the problem.
Simon even joked that his therapy sessions would make the best reality show in the world. And his word of advice is that everything is all about perspective. He realized that there will always be someone who will do better than you, and there will also be people who won’t do as well.
The founder and owner of the British company Syco Entertainment further shared that what’s important is finding your balance and finding that place where you feel comfortable.
Based on his experience, he knows that his previous obsession with his show’s ratings was detrimental to all aspects of his life.
Simon saw how his show, The X-Factor, declined in ratings after years of consistently high ratings and audience approval. After his sessions with this therapist, Simon admitted that he stopped looking at the ratings. He looks at what they’re making, and if he thinks it is good, he’s happy and satisfied.
He further shared, based on his experience, that being driven by numbers alone will indeed drive you nuts.
The record producer, talent scout, and television personality has decreased his working hours by a considerable amount lately. He and his partner, Lauren Silverman, share a son, Eric.
