Sarah Jessica Parker Recollects Her Embarrassment And Anger While Dating Ex-Beau Robert Downey Jr.
Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker is known to keep her relationships as private as she can, and recently, she made a surprising and exceptional remark as she recalled her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Robert Downey Jr.
Recall that the two shared a rather long romance from 1984 to 1991. And as the American actress pondered their seven-year relationship, she recalled feeling frustrated because it was public knowledge that the Iron Man actor was suffering from addiction by then. It seems that Sarah’s efforts to help her partner went unnoticed by the people close to Robert.
And it was the same addiction that caused their relationship to finally end. Sarah explained to The New Yorker, “People around him would be dismissive of me, but I had given him stability and tried to create a steady heartbeat that allowed him to show up on time.”
The indifferent treatment Sarah received made her angry, and it embarrassed her as well.
Going back to memory lane, Sarah and Robert met on the set of the drama Firstborn in 1984. Both were 18 years old, and many were surprised when they moved in together just after two months of dating.
Sarah continued to contemplate and mentioned that Robert was the first person she actually lived with. The six-time Golden Globe winner also reflected that Robert’s career was just beginning while they were together.
During one of her interviews in 2018, she had gushed at how proud she was of his success and how he was growing up professionally.
The Nelsonville, Ohio, native also described her time with Robert as adventurous and one of the most critical times of her life.
On the other hand, Robert also opened up in 2008 about how his addiction finally caused their breakup. He admitted that he liked to drink and had been dealing with drugs, which didn’t go down well with Sarah.
The actor and producer acknowledged that Sarah offered him understanding and a home. She also tried to help him. He further shared that he was in love with Sarah but realized that love was not enough back then.
After their split, the two reunited during their guest appearance on The Howard Stern Show in 2015, and Robert had nothing but praise for his ex-girlfriend. He marveled, “She’s so great and so cool and so funny and so in command. I got to meet her kids, and I saw the way she and [husband Matthew Broderick] live, and I respect both of them so much.”
Sarah married her husband, Matthew Broderick, in 1997 and shares three children with him, 20-year-old James and 13-year-old twins Marion and Tabitha.
Robert also found his happily ever after by marrying his wife, Susan Levin, in 2005. Robert shares a 29-year-old son named Indio with Deborah Falconer, his ex-wife.
Before finally saying “I do” to Matthew, Sarah dated several high-profile men, including Michael J. Fox, Joshua Kadison, and John Kennedy Jr. Robert also had romantic relationships with Marisa Tomei and Calista Flockhart.
