What Happens Now? Prince Harry And Meghan Markle’s Netflix Deal And Other Projects Are All Hanging Due To Ongoing Writers’ Strike
It’s been tough the last several months for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as their intended projects have not materialized as they hoped.
Currently, Prince Harry and Meghan’s £80-million Netflix deal and other projects are all thrown into uncertainty and chaos, making it more challenging for the couple, and this is all due to the Hollywood writers’ strike that’s happening.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex released their six-part documentary “Harry and Meghan” at the end of 2022, their first project from that multi-million Netflix deal signed with the streaming giant in 2020. This deal was shortly finalized after they stepped down as senior working royals.
And then, three weeks later, on New Year’s Eve, the couple’s second production called “Live to Lead” was released. This one was focused on global leaders with a common goal—to fight for social justice.
It has been reported that talks between the couple and Netflix about a third documentary are on. It will be shot in South Africa and tackle humanitarian issues, with the couple meeting and interacting with the local communities.
But the reality is, according to The Daily Telegraph, as disclosed by a source close to the couple, that they are in a difficult place to move forward with any planned projects because of the US writers’ strike that has been happening.
Lately, other stars, including Kevin Bacon, Bob Odenkirk, and Hilary Duff, have also joined in the strike, standing with their colleagues on the picket lines. What’s happening right now is the largest industry strike in the last six decades.
Just yesterday, another strike happened outside some of the major studios in LA, including Paramount, Netflix, Disney, and Warner Bros. Still, because of the extreme heat, some gatherings were cut short.
The strike started last Friday after a failed contract negotiation between the actors’ union, the Screen Actors Guild, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
As of today, there are about 160,000 actors actively participating in the strike, joining the earlier 11,500 members of the WGA, or Writers Guild of America, who also walked out in May. This is the first time these unions are going on strike, and it has paused all projects in Hollywood.
This same strike is negatively impacting Harry and Meghan’s plans, too, because they can’t move on with the possibility of a third production of their documentary.
There has yet to be any official news on what exactly the third production will be except that the couple has chosen their set as South Africa. There were talks the previous month that part of the documentary may be about the couple participating in building houses in the villages and the prospect of sharing medical education with the locals.
According to reports, Meghan appears to have set a goal of sharing information about birth and giving birth safely with the local women.
But Page Six reported that this upcoming project would only see Harry going to Africa, which he considered his second home. There were plans that the couple, as they move forward, would be doing separate projects that reflected their interests and strengths.
