Jared Leto Confesses To Using Drugs
During a guest appearance on The Zane Lowe Show, Jared Leto became candid about his experiences with drugs.
The 51-year-old actor and musician admitted to the New Zealander host that he had always been interested in drugs and grew up around them. He also revealed that he was fascinated by the idea of taking drugs and taking risks.
When asked about his curiosity about the substance, Jared explained, “I think that’s probably common for people to like to experiment or explore. I took it for a ride, and then it took me for a ride for sure.”
Jared, best known for his performance in the 2013 movie Dallas Buyers Club, told Zane, “I grew up in an environment where there were drugs around. I mean, I knew what the smell of weed is as a very, very young kid.”
He further explained, “I remember walking by some trees, like bushes or something as a young kid, very young kid, maybe, I don’t know, fourth grade or something. And saying to the other kids, ‘Oh, someone’s smoking pot there.’ They’re like, ‘What do you mean? What’s pot?’ They didn’t know what that certain spice was. But for us, it was pretty normal.”
However, he quickly added that addiction is an entirely different story. He reiterated that taking drugs was one thing, but the next decision is whether the person will allow them to take over their lives.
The Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman also revealed that there was a time in his life when he sold illicit substances.
The House of Gucci star mentioned that there had been a pivotal moment in his life that made him question his lifestyle and look at it with a clearer perspective. According to him, he saw two paths that he could take. The best scenario was the one where he was still alive. Sadly, he shared that many of his friends didn’t take that path and that they were no longer around.
The rock star’s interview on Apple Beats 1 wasn’t the first time that Jared was heard talking about his wild past and drugs. In 2016, Jared was also interviewed by Rolling Stone where he admitted to doing a lot of drugs, saying, “I did them, lots of them. A lot of them were really fun. There are just those few that tend to kick you in the ass… I guess that’s just the kind of fucked thing about a lot of drugs: The opportunity cost is too high. Some drugs are incredible, but the risk versus reward is out of line. I just saw too many examples of what not to do.”
Despite his various encounters with illegal substances, Jared has managed to kick the habit. He doesn’t even drink anymore. Instead, he enjoys a successful career with the off-beat roles he’s taken on. Jared’s acting chops have been recognized by prestigious award-giving bodies like the Academy Awards, the Screen Actor Guild Awards, Critcs’ Choice, the Golden Globe Awards, and many more.
