Does Ed Sheeran’s New Song Hint at Ongoing Marriage Problems?
Ed Sheeran’s new song, “Punchline,” may be hinting that all is not well in his marriage with childhood friend Cherry Seaborn. The new album, Autumn Variation, was recently released, and it strongly suggests that the two are going through a rough patch.
Interpreting the lyrics, the song suggests that Cherry might have asked for some space in their relationship. Ed, who was recently in New York to promote his seventh record, could be heard singing a song about a collapsing romance.
Keen fans and observers called attention to the song’s lyrics: “I can’t help but be destructive right now. It’s been weeks since I saw your outline. In my room, there is a silence so loud. This is what losing hope might sound like.”
The song’s emotional chorus goes, “I can’t help it, but I love you so. I can’t take this letting go. I still feel like we could work it out or something. All I am is only flesh and bone. Why’s your heart so freezing cold?”
Recall that the 32-year-old singer and his 31-year-old wife have been dating since 2015 and finally got married in 2019. They have two daughters together, 15-month-old Jupiter and 2-year-old Lyra.
In another song in the album, Ed sings about a bumpy road and emphasizes that it is not the end of their lives and that everything will be alright. During the song, “The Day I Was Born,” he croons, “I broke apart from my lover a couple months ago; if they were here, then I guess I wouldn’t be alone.”
The messages of his songs are almost the same. They both refer to a broken relationship that needs fixing. Many fans considered that Ed might not be telling his own story through his songs because he has said before that some of his songs are about the experiences of other people.
Ed’s newest album is the first under his label, Gingerbread Man. For sure, many are waiting for the artist’s new songs, and it is expected that his tracks will be a hit. To promote his album, Ed went to the Big Apple and was snapped holding a cardboard sign that said, “Autumn is here.”
Throughout his music career, Ed has had 14 songs rank number 1. The musician briefly talked about his newest album, sharing that in autumn 2022, he had several things going on. He stated, “When I went through a difficult time at the start of last year, writing songs helped me understand my feelings and come to terms with what was going on.”
He continued, “When I learned about my friend’s different situations, I wrote songs, some from their perspectives, some from mine, to capture how they and I viewed the world at that time.”
It was then mentioned that his upcoming album will deliver many emotions ranging from loneliness, heartbreak, confusion, and heartbreak. Ed also revealed that his latest album was significantly inspired by Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Edwards is a British composer who created 14 compositions, all based on 14 of his friends. Ed adopted the same approach and worked with songwriter Aaron Dessner. He described that the album was born from his partnership with Aaron. He also mentioned that he was grateful that they were able to capture the emotions of autumn through their collaboration.
As of writing, Ed and his wife have yet to release any statements regarding possible marital woes.
