John Stamos Opens Up About Painful Past That Had Ex-Girlfriend Teri Copley In Bed With Tony Danza

In a candid revelation, John Stamos has shared a painful chapter from his past in his upcoming memoir, If You Would Have Told Me. Stamos, the beloved actor known for his role in Full House, recalls an incident from the 1980s that left him emotionally scarred but ultimately led to his growth as an individual.
During that period, John said he was was dating model-actress Teri Copley, and their relationship was a topic of interest among fans and the media. In a shocking turn of events, he walked into Teri’s guesthouse one fateful day and found her asleep in bed with a man he initially didn’t recognize but had “ripped abs.” The sight left him breathless, and he stumbled out of the room in disbelief.
John’s emotions were a whirlwind of pain and anger. In his own words, “I can’t explain it, but I would’ve rather been punched in the nose again or something because the pain is so overwhelming.”
He later realized that the man in bed with Teri was none other than Tony Danza, a fellow actor and public figure.
“At first, I was like, ‘I’m going to kick his…’ I didn’t know it was [Danza] yet. I see his abs. I’m like, ‘Maybe not. F— it.’ And I ran,” Stamos recalls, vividly describing his tumultuous emotions. “But I remember running down the driveway with tears streaming down my face and I didn’t want anyone to see me.”
Teri, who is now 62, maintains that her relationship with John had already ended by the time of the incident. She expressed confusion about John’s presence and recalled his disapproving look before he walked away.
John’s memoir details how he eventually identified Tony as the mysterious man in bed with Teri. According to him, a signed poster in an unfamiliar car outside Teri’s home, bearing the words “My Dear Tony,” revealed the truth.
“I jump in the El Co, start the car, and Elton John is still singing, and that’s when it hits me. I mouth the words to his most famous lyrics and realize the name of my rival: ‘Hold me closer, Tony Danza. . . .’” he recalled in his memoir.
Reflecting on this painful episode from his past, John describes Teri as “just a nice person” and acknowledges his own immaturity at the time. He believes that he hadn’t yet fully matured into a man, and this experience was a turning point for him.
“I mean, it wasn’t right to cheat on me, but I was too immature; I wasn’t a man. I didn’t become a man for a long time, and I think she was… I don’t know. I was broken,” he admitted.
