The Three Words That Will Lead Emily Blunt to Automatically Reject a Script
All actors and actresses have prerequisites when accepting roles to play. Emily Blunt is no exception.
The Devil Wears Prada actress revealed three words that will make her turn down an acting opportunity right then and there: “strong female lead.”
While speaking with The Telegraph in 2022, Emily recalled saying, “It’s the worst thing ever when you open a script and read the words ‘strong female lead.”
The actress said that seeing those three words makes her eyes roll. Even before getting involved, she was already out. Emily admitted that she associated those three words with boredom and extreme stoicism.
Emily explained her point of view: “Those roles are written as incredibly stoic; you spend the whole time acting tough and saying tough things.”
Emily, who recently promoted her movie, The English, shared that she loves characters with a secret.
Looking back at Emily’s previous roles, it’s easy to see that her characters have always been extraordinary in some way—from playing the sassy senior assistant Emily in The Devil Wears Prada, Queen Freya in The Huntsman: Winter’s War, and survival trainer Rita Vrataski in Edge of Tomorrow.
The 40-year-old actress is also known for Hollywood blockbuster hits like A Quiet Place, Oppenheimer, The Girl on the Train, and Mary Poppins Returns.
Her previous roles have certainly made her portfolio interesting and one-of-a-kind. She added another impressive character in her career when she played Kitty Oppenheimer. The production was a biopic on the life of Robert Oppenheimer, the leader of the Manhattan Project and the team who created the first atomic bomb.
This year has been a busy one for the British actress as she recently starred with Chris Evans, Catherine O’Hara, and Andy Garcia in Pain Hustlers. She also wrapped up another project, The Fall Guy, a film adaptation of the popular 1980s TV series, where she starred with Ryan Gosling.
Emily took her stand after making her opinion known about gender inequality. According to her, the pressure for women to be likable and warm is high. At the same time, the same standards aren’t maintained and aren’t even an issue for male leads.
For now, Emily is enjoying a brief break from her busy career. She candidly shared, “This year, I’m not working. I worked quite a bit last year, and my oldest baby is nine, so we’re in the last year of single digits.”
She continued, “And I just feel [like] there are cornerstones to their day that are so important when they’re little. And it’s, ‘Will you wake me up? Will you take me to school? Will you pick me up? Will you put me to bed?’ And I just need to be there for all of them for a good stretch. And I just felt that in my bones.”
While we will certainly miss Emily and the vibrant roles she has been known to take on, her duties as a mother are undoubtedly more important.
