RIP Chandler: The Friends Cast Is Considering a Matthew Perry Tribute at the Emmy Awards
Talks of a Friends reunion are underway as the original cast of Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc are believed to be in early talks of honoring Matthew Perry at the Emmy Awards this coming January.
The actors want to share their memories of Matthew, who gave life to the quick-witted and much-loved Chandler Bing in the popular 90s sitcom. According to his Friends co-stars, a tribute for him is something he rightfully deserves.
The actor was found lifeless last October 28 in his home. He was 54 years old.
Jen, Lisa, and the rest of the Friends cast want to give him a public tribute, and the upcoming Emmy appears to be the most suitable setting for it. Matthew will indeed be featured in the In Memoriam segment of the evening, but his co-stars would also love to appear together to share a personal account of their memories with him.
According to a source, “They all would love to get together on stage to speak about him and have their unique moment sharing memories about him and telling the world about the man he was in real life. If they can all agree on a worthy tribute and get his family’s blessing, they will absolutely get together to make that night a special moment for Matthew and all who loved him.”
The 75th Emmy Awards will be held on January 15 at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theatre. During his career, Matthew was nominated five times for an Emmy award. This includes Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Chandler Bing. He was also selected twice for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his appearances on The West Wing in 2003 and 2004.
News about the cast organizing a public tribute comes after they shared their memories of Matthew on their social media accounts.
Matt LeBlanc shared a throwback picture of him with Matthew while on the set of Friends and captioned it with, “Matthew. It is with a heavy heart I say goodbye. The times we had together are honestly among my favorite times of my life. It was an honor to share the stage with you and to call you my friend. I will always smile when I think of you and never forget you. Never.”
Meanwhile, Jennifer shared a screenshot of a message that he received from Matthew, where he mentioned how he relishes making the actress laugh. She said, “Oh boy, this one has cut deep…Having to say goodbye to our Matty has been an insane wave of emotions that I’ve never experienced before. We all experience loss at some point in our lives. Loss of life or loss of love.”
The actress, revealed to be one of the closest to Matthew, said that the Friends cast was a chosen family who loved Matthew deeply before asserting that Matthew was part of their DNA.
Courteney, who played Monica, Chandler’s true love in the show, shared her thoughts by writing, “I am so grateful for every moment I had with you, Matty, and I miss you every day. When you work with someone as closely as I did with Matthew, there are thousands of moments I wish I could share. For now, here’s one of my favorites.”
David thanked Matthew for the “ten incredible years of laughter and creativity” with a photo of Matthew in a white suit.
Lisa posted a photo of them together while thanking Matthew for how, in so many ways, he impacted her life by saying, “Thank you for making me laugh so hard at something you said that my muscles ached, and tears poured down my face EVERY DAY.”
