Cher and Turning 77: How the ‘Believe’ Hitmaker Wants To Turn Back Time
Music legend Cher recently turned 77, and she admitted how she hates that aging—despite it being inevitable—is already happening to her. The singer said she would love to turn back time (reference intended!) and do anything just to be 70 again.
Last Tuesday, Cher shared her thoughts and feelings about getting older in a pre-recorded interview with NBC’s Harry Smith. Her appearance was a special episode to mark the 25th anniversary of her hit song, Believe. Naturally, the conversation turned to the decades that have passed.
When Cher was asked how amazing it was that her song was already a quarter of a century old, the American singer cheekily negated, “It is not that amazing, okay? P*sses the s*** out of me!”
Harry further probed, “So, you and age, you are not friends?”
Cher answered, “No. My mother didn’t mind, but I do. I hate it.”
The 72-year-old host empathized with the singer because he also had his own battle with aging. He confessed to Cher, “I had a tough time with 70. I will admit it. I mean, like, really knocked me in a hole for a while.”
This prompted Cher to admit she’d give anything to be 70 again.
Cher celebrated her 70th birthday back in May 20, 2016. And now that she is nearing the eighth decade of her life, she said she refuses to accept it and doesn’t want to.
But the thing is, she doesn’t know how to stop it.
The Goddess of Pop said, “If I put 70 candles on my cake, I would blow my brains out.” She also added that she’s “never satisfied” with herself. Reflecting on her career and legacy, the singer stated, “I’ve never really been in love with Cher. She’s all right, but I’m—it’s like, I’m not a huge fan.”
This confession from someone who has had a very successful career—an icon in every way—can be mind-boggling to some. Still, many were able to relate: getting old doesn’t necessarily mean that you have finally found yourself or loved and accepted yourself wholly.
The song Believe debuted on October 19, 1988; it was a commercial success from day one. Everyone knew about that song; it has become a classic Cher track. It is, without doubt, Cher’s most successful single. With over 11 million copies sold, it has made Cher a household name, and the song’s legacy continues to this day. It is an anthem for millions across generations.
Cher also revealed her secrets on maintaining her youthful appearance last September. At her appearance on Good Morning Britain, she gushed about not believing that she’ll be turning 80 soon. To answer the hosts Ed Balls and Susanna Reid about her secret to youth, Cher approached the question differently: she said things she won’t do as she gets older. She said she would never stop wearing jeans and would not cut her long hair no matter how old she was.
