Jenna Ortega and Jacob Elordi: A Potentially “Perfect” Pair for Twilight’s Reboot?
Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke thinks Jenna Ortega and Jacob Elordi would make the “perfect” pair in Twilight’s reboot. Yes, you read that right!
To celebrate the Twilight director’s 15th anniversary, Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast interviewed Hardwicke where she spoke about a potential reboot that has fans squealing.
Hardwicke agreed that it’s time for Bella Swan and Edward Cullen (previously played by Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson), the protagonists in the series, to have new faces—most possibly Jenna Ortega and Jacob Elordi.
Horowitz asked who the director believed should portray the couple, “Is there anyone in the new crop today? Like, who do you cast? Is Jacob Elordi Edward Cullen today? Is Jenna Ortega…” To which Hardwicke responded, “Oh yeah, that would be perfect.” The director went on to say that she found Elordi and Ortega’s portrayal of Wednesday “amazing.”
While the 68-year-old director wasn’t the first to drop their names, she completely agreed with Horowitz’s suggestions, indicating that the duo taking on the lead roles for the reboot was a real possibility.
The Twilight movie franchise, which was based on the books written by Stephenie Meyer, was one of the biggest films in the 2000s, grossing nearly $35.7 million on its opening day and $393.6 million worldwide. The first release enjoyed such immense success that it led to four more installments—New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn I, and Breaking Dawn II. Besides Stewart and Pattinson, the movie also featured Taylor Lautner and Ashley Greene.
When asked what the audience should expect from the new series, Catherine Hardwicke responded that she still doesn’t know what the new adaptation will look like. “I don’t know yet. Maybe they don’t even know,” she responded. However, she admitted, “For me, it would be fun to do Twilight in outer space,” she revealed. “I would be ecstatic to do that, something totally different.”
Yup, no one saw that coming. While we don’t know much about the upcoming series or even the cast, it’s safe to say that the Twilight saga kickstarted the careers of its leading actors. Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner were fairly new faces at the time of release but they all went on to Hollywood success, starring in critically acclaimed films that showcased their acting prowess.
On the other hand, 21-year-old Ortega has already starred in hits like Scream, Wednesday, and You. While Ortega starred in a couple of franchises of her own, fans suspect that she’ll be up for another one. She will soon play the lead in Beetlejuice 2 by Tim Burton.
Meanwhile, Kissing Booth alumni, Elordi, recently publicly expressed his displeasure with the franchise. He went so far as to say, “I didn’t want to make those movies before I made those movies. Those movies are ridiculous. They’re not universal. They’re an escape.” Fans think that with hits like Euphoria, Priscilla, and Saltburn, Elordi might not be all in for another love-to-hate franchise like Twilight.
Overall, people seem to have mixed reactions about the reboot, its potential pairing, and even Hardwicke’s outer space vision. Nonetheless, Twilight fans expressed their curiosity during the podcast. They asked the director questions like which scenes were hardest to film and how the two leads were getting along.
