Gwen Stefani is gearing up for an exhilarating blast from the past as she prepares for the highly awaited No Doubt reunion at Coachella. In an intimate conversation on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday night, the legendary Cool singer offered fans an inside look into what promises to be a nostalgic and electrifying performance.
Expressing her excitement for the upcoming festival set, Gwen acknowledged the potential need to reacquaint herself with some of the band’s older hits. “
“It’s crazy. It’s gonna be amazing. I’m so excited. And I think what is gonna be hilarious is, I know what’s gonna happen, I’m gonna get onstage and look around and just start like, cracking up because it’s just gonna be like riding a bike. We’re gonna be like, ‘What are we doing? We’re in the future right now, we’re at Coachella.’ It’s gonna be bizarre,” she enthused.
No Doubt, comprising Stefani on vocals, Tom Dumont on guitar, Tony Kanal on bass, and Adrian Young on drums, last graced the stage together in 2015, marking a significant reunion following the release of their album Push and Shove in 2012.
Amidst the anticipation, Gwen humorously revealed her desire to incorporate her signature stage antics, playfully inquiring about the availability of trellises for her to climb during the performance. “I would start doing my squats like, today and get ready for it,” she quipped.
The singer’s enthusiasm for the Coachella reunion extends beyond the stage, as she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to reconnect with fans and relive the band’s remarkable journey. “It just happened so fast, and that’s my favorite kind of thing to happen. We haven’t really figured out the next steps of how we’re going to do this, but we’re just all so excited. And I think really just watching the internet blow up [with] how excited that the fans are? It’s inspiring us,” she shared.
The excitement surrounding the No Doubt reunion coincides with Gwen’s collaboration with her husband, country star Blake Shelton, on their new duet Purple Irises. Initially written as a solo project, the song evolved into a joint effort after Blake’s enthusiastic response to the demo.
Reflecting on the collaboration, Gwen marveled at the seamless synergy between their voices. “It ended up I didn’t have to rewrite anything, it just worked,” she revealed, adding, “It was just a magical… The street that we recorded on was called Iris Street, so I was like, ‘What is happening?’ Now here we are, playing it live.”
As Gwen and Blake celebrate the release of Purple Irises and gear up for the Coachella performance, fans eagerly anticipate a nostalgic journey through the band’s timeless hits and a celebration of enduring musical legacy.
In anticipation of the reunion, Gwen emphasized the band’s camaraderie and the joy of performing together once again. “It’s gonna be bizarre,” she remarked with a hint of excitement, underscoring the surreal experience of revisiting their iconic songs on the Coachella stage.
As for the songs, Gwen said that she might have to relearn some of them. “I don’t remember them, no, not at all. I don’t! I think I’m going to have to learn probably like, eight or nine [songs]. One of the first songs I ever wrote was called ‘Different People;’ we’re doing that,” he told Jimmy.
