In a candid conversation with PEOPLE magazine, Tameka Foster, the former wife of renowned singer Usher, revealed the harrowing ordeal she faced during a planned liposuction surgery back in 2009. At 53, Tameka bravely recounted the frightening moment when she went into cardiac arrest while under anesthesia, a moment that forever changed her perspective on beauty and self-care.
Reflecting on the incident, the fashion stylist disclosed, “I never had it. I went in an attempt to have liposuction and I went into a cardiac arrest with the anesthesiologist. The doctor never even entered the room.”
The health scare not only altered Tameka’s physical well-being but also reshaped her mindset regarding beauty standards. Admitting to previously succumbing to societal pressures and negative comments during her marriage to Usher, she acknowledged a shift in her approach to beauty. “I still care about looks and vanity, but I plan to do it the natural way. That’s all. Totally,” she affirmed.
Embracing a more holistic approach to health, Tameka adopted lifestyle changes, including a revamped diet and intermittent fasting. Her commitment to natural methods led to a significant weight loss of approximately 20 lbs. before the filming of the show Bold & Bougie.
As the stylist recalled, “So I lost probably 20 lbs. before we started filming the show [Bold & Bougie]. In the past year, I’ve been really diligent about keeping my weight to a certain number. I mean, I go up and down, but yeah, I do care less about it. I’m not as anal about it.”
Despite occasional fluctuations in weight, she now prioritizes overall well-being over obsessive concerns about physical appearance.
Revisiting the events of 2009, details emerged from the Brazilian plastic surgeon slated to perform Tameka’s liposuction. Ellen Dasptry, a representative for Dr. Silvio Sterman, revealed that Tameka’s cardiac arrest occurred shortly after anesthesia administration, necessitating a medically induced coma.
In her words, “Tameka Raymond came here on Friday to do a liposuction. Shortly after she went under [general] anesthesia, she suffered a cardiac arrest.”
“When an attack like this happens, the doctors put the patient to sleep… and make sure that everything is okay and that there has not been any damage. This is the protocol every time and this is what was done,” Ellen added.
Following stringent medical protocols, she received prompt medical attention and was transferred to a reputable medical facility in Sao Paulo for further treatment.
After nearly a week of intensive care, Tameka exhibited remarkable resilience and made a full recovery.
