How Bobby Brown And Mike Tyson Keep Each Other Strong After Kids’ Deaths
Longtime friends Bobby Brown and Mike Tyson, both icons in their respective fields, have shared more than just moments of fame and glory. Recently, they’ve leaned on each other for support through some of life’s toughest challenges.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Bobby, the Grammy-winning New Edition singer, opened up about his deep connection with the legendary boxing champion, Mike. Their bond, forged through years of friendship, has only grown stronger in the face of tragedy.
The pair reunited at the Bobbi Kristina Serenity House Gala, a charitable event aimed at raising awareness about domestic violence, which was held on March 4. Bobby’s late daughter, Bobbi Kristina, whom he shared with Whitney Houston, was the inspiration behind the event.
Reflecting on their friendship, Bobby reminisced about the early days when they first crossed paths. “We go way back. When he first started fighting and I first went solo we did a lot of hanging out together,” he asked.
However, it was the shared experience of losing a child that deepened their bond even further. Bobby lost his daughter, Bobbi Kristina, in 2015 at the age of 22, while Tyson endured the heartbreaking loss of his 4-year-old daughter, Exodus, in 2009.
Through the years, they’ve stood by each other, offering unwavering support during moments of grief. Bobby expressed gratitude for Mike’s presence in his life, saying, “His support is great. Him being a friend of mine and having someone else to talk to to get through, because he also lost a child, and just to have him as a friend, it means everything to me.”
Despite the pain they share, Bobby revealed that they often steer clear of discussing their losses directly. “We try to stay away from it,” he admitted, acknowledging the need to maintain a semblance of normalcy amidst their shared sorrow.
Looking ahead, Bobby eagerly anticipates Mike’s return to the boxing ring after years of absence. Mike is slated to face Jake Paul, a much younger opponent, in a highly-anticipated match scheduled for this summer in Arlington, Texas. Bobby expressed his unwavering support for Mike, vowing to be there in the front row to cheer him on.
“He’s really looking forward to it,” Bobby remarked, “I’m going to be there front and center, making sure that he does what he plans on doing. He’s going to hurt that boy. Mike’s in great shape. I don’t think that boy realizes who he actually signed a contract with.”
