Gwen Stefani recently bared her soul in a candid interview with NYLON, shedding light on the emotional journey behind her latest duet, Purple Irises, featuring her husband Blake Shelton.
In the interview, Gwen, 54, revealed that the songwriting process for Purple Irises coincided with a period of self-doubt and anxiety about her marriage. Despite her successful career, Gwen confessed to grappling with insecurities about her age and appearance.
“I had been going through those times where you’re questioning: ‘Oh my gosh, am I just getting older? Am I cute?’ In my own relationship, even though I know the truth of what’s happening today, you still create drama in your own mind about your insecurities and what might happen. I was in that phase of the relationship with Blake and getting paranoid,” she stated.
Blake, 47, echoed Gwen’s sentiments, acknowledging the shared insecurities they navigate together as a couple. “These are conversations that she and I have with each other: ‘Are you still going to love me when I’m old or if I forget who I am?’” he revealed.
The inspiration for Purple Irises struck Gwen during a moment of reflection, as she recalled discovering the flowers blooming on Blake’s Oklahoma ranch during the pandemic. The couple embarked on a transplanting project, as they recalled.
Reflecting on their dynamic, Blake praised his wife’s nurturing nature, likening her gardening skills to their relationship. “Gwen has an incredible sense for planting things: how to grow them and, once it’s growing, how to cultivate it, and when to prune something,” he shared.
For Gwen, Purple Irises serves as a reminder to cherish the present and embrace love. “The truth is I am in love with my best friend,” she affirmed. “And all this s— I’m thinking of in my brain, that’s all it is — I’m overthinking.”
Gwen and Blake’s love story began on the set of The Voice in 2015, blossoming into a romance that culminated in marriage in 2021. Their journey to happiness was marked by divorces from their previous partners, Gavin Rossdale and Miranda Lambert, respectively.
