David Beckham Says Spice Girls Reunion At Victoria’s 50th Birthday Bash Was A Surprise For Him Too
David Beckham was thrilled to witness an unexpected Spice Girls reunion during his wife Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday celebration in London. The iconic ’90s girl group, which catapulted Victoria to fame before she became a celebrated fashion designer, surprised guests with a nostalgic performance at the star-studded event.
During a lively chat on Jimmy Kimmel Live on May 8, David shared how the legendary group, consisting of Melanie Brown (Mel B), Melanie Chisholm (Mel C), Emma Bunton, and Geri Halliwell Horner, came together for the first time in over a decade to celebrate the occasion. “It’s actually been 12 years since they did the Olympics in the U.K. but over 15 years since they actually were on a stage together,” David explained to the amused host. He orchestrated the entire birthday event without anticipating that the Spice Girls would end up performing.
“So obviously having them all there that night, and I didn’t expect them to all get up on stage,” he said of the event,” he shared.
The reunion was sparked during a heartwarming segment planned by David and his children, where they recreated the music video for Mama, a 1996 hit by the Spice Girls. As their son Cruz Beckham strummed the guitar and sang, the Spice Girls couldn’t resist joining in.
As David recalled, “But I had a whole video planned where me and my kids recreated the ‘Mama’ video. My son, who plays the guitar and sings, had a song, and he sang ‘Mama,’ and all of a sudden all the girls got up — and I’m their biggest fan, you know? I tend not to tell my wife that. I tend to tell her that I fancied her, but she was a Spice Girl. I love that about her… So I was a fan.”
The highlight of the evening came when the band sang Mama together, with Cruz accompanying on acoustic guitar. The performance was met with cheers and laughter, especially when Mel B humorously questioned if they were in tune. Later, the celebration continued with the group dancing to their 1997 hit Stop, a moment captured by David and shared by Victoria on Instagram with the caption, “Best night ever! Happy Birthday to me! I love you all so much! #SpiceUpYourLife.”
David also shared his enthusiasm on social media, posting a clip of the performance and expressing his joy with a colorful array of emojis and tags of each band member. The reunion was a rare treat for fans and a delightful surprise for David, proving that the magic of the Spice Girls still resonates years after their peak.
Since their official split in 2001, the Spice Girls have remained close friends and briefly reunited for a tour in 2019, although Victoria did not participate. The unexpected performance at Victoria’s birthday not only marked a significant milestone but also rekindled the joy and camaraderie of the group, much to the delight of their fans.
