Emily Osment Hints At Heartbreak Over “Young Sheldon” Finale, Reflects On Becoming Series Regular
Wrapping up her time on the beloved CBS comedy Young Sheldon, Emily Osment shared her bittersweet feelings in an interview with PEOPLE in April. The show, which airs its final two episodes on May 16, has been a significant part of Emily’s life, transforming her role from a guest appearance into a series regular.
Emily, now 32, reminisced about the unexpected journey that began with a single episode. “I’ll never forget sitting on the steps outside my house and getting the call that I was going to do an episode of [Young] Sheldon. I was like, ‘Oh, that sounds fun. I love Chuck Lorre,’” she recalled.
What started as a guest role quickly expanded. “I was just supposed to do one guest star appearance. That was my deal. It was one episode, and then they brought me back for two more, and then they brought me back for seven more. Then they brought me on as a regular,” she shared.
Emily’s character, Mandy, first appeared in season 5 and soon became a fan favorite. Mandy’s storyline grew significantly, including having a baby with George and eventually tying the knot with him in a memorable city hall wedding. The event was attended by beloved characters Meemaw (played by Annie Potts), Dale (played by Craig T. Nelson), Mary (played by Zoe Perry), George Sr. (played by Lance Barber), Missy (played by Raegan Revord), Georgie (played by Montana Jordan), Jim (played by Will Sasso), and Audrey (played by Rachel Bay Jones). Reflecting on Mandy and George’s wedding, Emily remarked, “I think a disaster courthouse wedding is kind of the only way Mandy and Georgie were supposed to do it.”
Fans will be thrilled to know that Mandy and George’s story is far from over. Due to the character’s popularity, CBS announced a spinoff series titled George & Mandy’s First Marriage, set to begin filming this summer. While plot details are still under wraps, the network hinted that the show will focus on Mandy and George raising their family in Texas while dealing with the challenges of adulthood, parenting, and marriage.
Emily is excited about the spinoff, eager to explore more dimensions of her character. As she told PEOPLE last month “It’s hinted in the marriage episode that [Mandy] wants to go back to school, that she maybe wants to have a career, that she doesn’t want to just be a stay-at-home mom, which is how I feel. “I think that’s such a tremendous thing for mothers to also be working, and I can’t wait to see what they do with that.”
As Young Sheldon approaches its conclusion, Emily expressed her desire to savor every moment of the final episodes. “I can’t wait for what’s next, but I definitely want to give [Young] Sheldon its due,” she said.
She also teased an emotional finale, advising fans to be prepared. “The finale is going to truly break your heart. Make sure you’re sitting down and you have Kleenex,” she warned!
