Happy Gilmore 2 Is Officially In The Works And Adam Sandler Is Returning!
On May 15, Netflix announced that Adam Sandler, now 57, will return as Happy Gilmore in a sequel to the beloved 1996 golf comedy.
“Happy Gilmore is back! Adam Sandler will reprise his iconic role in a brand new movie coming to Netflix,” the streaming service excitedly shared on X (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter).
In a video posted by the PGA Tour on X, Adam took to the golf course, saying, “It’s been 25 years since I’ve done this.”
“Let’s see what happens, I’m scared! Shooter McGavin, this is for you… that went pretty well, you’re dead Shooter!” he said further, making a reference to Christopher McDonald’s character from the original film.
“He’s baaack,” the account captioned the video.
Adam co-wrote, produced, and starred in the original Happy Gilmore, portraying a wannabe hockey player from New England who turns to golfing to save his grandmother’s home from foreclosure. With his unique hockey-style swing and guidance from former pro “Chubbs” Peterson (played by Carl Weathers), Happy finds unexpected success on the golf course. Sadly, Carl passed away in February at the age of 76.
The original film also featured a memorable rivalry between Happy and the antagonist, Shooter McGavin, played by Christopher. Back in March, Christopher, confirmed that Adam was indeed working on a sequel. During an interview with Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan, Christopher shared, “I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this.’
“I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that?’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2,” the 69-year-old continued, adding, “Maybe you should cut that out because I don’t want to be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Wow, that would be awesome.'”
Adding to the excitement, Drew Barrymore revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show that she had texted Adam about the sequel. “Are you kidding me? I want it, I need it, and I stayed up last night with my daughter watching Billy Madison,” she said, referencing another of Adam’s classic ’90s comedies.
Drew shared that Adam had sent her a video in response, hinting at the progress of the Happy Gilmore 2 script.
“So this just in, breaking news: I’ll just say this, from my source, that it is in process. There is a process and that process is in process,” the 49-year-old actress shared.
