John Krasinski Reveals Hilarious Heist from “The Office” Set
John Krasinski has come clean about a sneaky act he committed on the last day of filming The Office. During a May 15 guest appearance on the Office Ladies podcast, hosted by his former co-stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, John, 44, confessed to taking the iconic Dunder Mifflin sign.
Reflecting on their final moments, John reminisced about the emotional last scene at Poor Richard’s dive bar, orchestrated by the show’s “evil genius” creator Greg Daniels. The entire cast entered and exited the set repeatedly, and upon their last entrance, the whole crew was gathered, clapping and cheering.
“I’m choking up just talking about it,” Krasinski shared, “but then when you come back in and see your TV dad and all of your family waiting there and clapping, and [Greg] said, ‘That’s the end of The Office,’ I think the color black came out of my mouth. It was just the scariest, most beautiful, horrific moment of my life.”
Thirty minutes after that incident, John said he took the Dunder Mifflin sign. “I’ve always lied to Greg that I didn’t take it, but I did. I stole it,” he admitted.
Angela, who watched John sneak the sign into the back of his car, recalls it as “one of her favorite memories” of their last day.
“I was like, don’t look over here! It wasn’t quite dark enough. Yeah So it just looked like I was putting a body in a car,” John recounted.
Greg later approached John at the wrap party, asking if he had seen the sign. John denied knowing anything about it. As they recalled, Angela, who played Angela Martin on the show, “never told anyone” about what she saw.
“Well, now you did. You told everyone. And I was dressed like a cat burglar,” John joked.
In other news, The Office is set to receive a spinoff. Daniels and Michael Koman (Nathan for You) are teaming up for a new Peacock series starring Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore. The spinoff will follow the crew behind the filming of The Office as they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.
Production is scheduled to begin in July, but many former The Office stars won’t be part of the new show. Jenna, who played Pam Beesly, told PEOPLE she is “not involved” and hasn’t been approached about the project.
Steve Carell, known for his role as Michael Scott, also confirmed he won’t appear in the spinoff. “It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character to show up in something like that. But I’m excited about it, it sounds like a great conceit,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
John also addressed the upcoming spinoff at the premiere of Carell’s new film IF on May 13. When asked if he was involved with the project, he said, “I know nothing about it other than I think it’s taking place in a newspaper, a local newspaper, and that Domhnall Gleeson, who I am working with right now, who’s the sweetest, most talented guy, he’s going to crush… whatever it is… he’s going to crush it.”
Asked about the possibility of reprising his role as Jim, John replied, “No, they haven’t asked but the truth is I’d do anything Greg Daniels asked me to do.”
