Camila Cabello Reflects On Her First Love, Says She Lost Virginity To Ex Matthew Hussey
Camila Cabello recently opened up about a significant moment in her life, sharing details about her first relationship and losing her virginity to her first real boyfriend, Matthew Hussey. The singer, now 27, reminisced about her romance with the 36-year-old relationship coach on the latest episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast.
The story began in February 2018, when Camila introduced herself to Matthew on the set of the TODAY show. “I was outside where they have the TV with the scripts. I had actually listened to his podcast before as a fan because he had a dating podcast. I love podcasts.”
Their initial conversation led to dinner that same night, marking the start of her first serious relationship.
Camila shared that she was 20 years old at the time and felt lonely before meeting Matthew. “I was like, ‘Oh my God. I’ve never had a boyfriend,'” she said, reflecting on how her feelings of loneliness inspired many of her songs during that period. “There were, like, literally eight songs that were, like, basically, lonely. I am so lonely,” she recollected.
When asked by Dax if she had been sexually active before this relationship, Camila responded, “No. That was my first time having sex. First lovemaking was at 20, 21. … It was literally lovemaking. It was beautiful.”
She noted that Matthew’s experience as a relationship coach made him an excellent partner. “He was a really great person. It was like the perfect first relationship,” she said, appreciating how he expanded her world beyond the music industry.
“Really expanded my world because he wasn’t in my industry too. It was like, ‘Oh my God. Have you ever seen Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown? And have you ever seen Studio Ghibli films?’ He just really expanded my references,” she shared.
Their relationship, which PEOPLE confirmed ended in June 2019, was a pivotal experience for Camila. Shortly after, in July 2019, she began dating fellow musician Shawn Mendes. Their relationship lasted two years, ending in November 2021. Despite sparking rumors of a romantic reconciliation after being spotted kissing at Coachella in April 2023, PEOPLE confirmed the two were still single that June.
Matthew Hussey, meanwhile, married Audrey Le Strat in October 2023 and released his second book, Love Life, in April.
Camila Cabello is now looking forward to the release of her upcoming fourth album, C, XOXO, set to drop on Friday, June 28. This album promises to be another exciting chapter in her musical journey, undoubtedly infused with the personal growth and experiences from her past relationships.
