Allison Holker Boss Says She Finds It Hard To Dance Again After Husband Stephen “tWitch” Boss’ Death
Allison Holker Boss, known for her incredible storytelling through dance, has not fully immersed herself in dancing since the tragic death of her husband, Stephen “tWitch” Boss. During her appearance on The Squeeze podcast on May 29, she shared her struggle with expressing grief through dance and why she hasn’t been able to practice her craft as she used to.
Allison, 36, explained that she’s always been “known as the storyteller” in the dance industry, often conveying “big stories” of “sadness, pain, abuse, cancer,” and more through her choreography. For her, dancing has felt like “therapy,” helping friends share their lives’ stories.
“I’ve always been honored to do that for the people I love,” she said. However, she admitted that she hasn’t been able to dance at that deep, emotional level since her husband’s passing.
While she has engaged in some “fun dancing” on TikTok and practiced “some hip hop,” Allison revealed that she hasn’t danced in the profound way she’s known for.
“I have the biggest story to tell now,” she shared, adding, “I think I’m still trying to prepare myself for it or learn that story. So before I step into that role for myself, I still haven’t.”
She noted that people often assume she’s back to dancing fully when they see her on social media. “A lot of people are like, ‘Oh, she’s dancing now.’ I’m like, yeah. But the way you know me as a dancer, I have not danced,” she explained.
She believes that dancing will eventually become a significant part of her life again.
Allison and Stephen fell in love after sharing their first dance at the wrap party of So You Think You Can Dance in 2010, where she appeared as an All-Star. Their relationship flourished, and they built a family together, with Stephen adopting her daughter Weslie, 14, when they married in 2013, and welcoming their son Maddox, 7, and daughter Zaia, 3. Dancing was always a central part of their bond.
This isn’t the first time Allison has spoken about her difficulty returning to dance. Four months after Stephen’s death from suicide at age 40 in December 2022, she told PEOPLE that she hadn’t yet danced. “I’ve wiggled with my kids here and there… but I haven’t yet,” she shared, adding, “I know that I will get there. I will.”
Reflecting on her journey, she added, “That will probably be, honestly, my last step into healing. The healing will be going on forever. I know that’s gonna be a big step for me, but I’ll get there.”
