Sara Ramírez, known for their role in And Just Like That..., has officially filed for divorce from husband Ryan DeBolt. This decision comes three years after they publicly announced their separation. In court documents obtained by PEOPLE, the 48-year-old actor cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split from DeBolt, whom they married in 2012.
Sara, who came out as non-binary in 2020 and uses they/them pronouns, listed the date of separation as January 2018. This was more than three years before they announced the couple’s split on social media.
In a since-deleted Instagram post in July 2021, they wrote, “Ryan and I are no longer together. We remain loving and supportive in how we are choosing to forge our new individual paths.”
“Thank you for holding space around our choices and respecting our families’ privacy as we navigate this process on our own terms,” they added.
In the divorce filing, first reported by TMZ, the former Grey’s Anatomy star requested that their assets be divided according to their prenuptial agreement and that the court’s ability to award spousal support to either party be terminated.
On their 48th birthday in August, Sara shared a message of self-love in a since-deleted Instagram post.
“There is so much to say but I’m gonna keep it simple. You’re welcome,” they wrote, adding, “Happy birthday to me. May this kid continue to feel and know that they are loved beyond their gender, they are valued beyond their productivity, and they will always be held and protected by this softening blossoming adult who may or may not be bringing their killer mullet back.”
In December 2021, Sara reflected on their journey of self-discovery in an interview with PEOPLE. “There was so much for me to unlearn, and I faced my own internalized oppression. In this society, we often feel this pressure to live in these rigid boxes. When I stepped out of the box I had put myself in, I discovered my own possibilities for change,” they said.
