Ashanti Overjoyed By Nelly’s Proposal And Dreaming Of A Tropical Wedding
Ashanti is beaming with joy over her engagement to Nelly. The couple, who first dated in the early 2000s and reunited a decade later, are now planning their future together and expecting their first child.
The singer shared with Entertainment Tonight the sweet and surprising details of Nelly’s proposal. Describing it as a “beautiful, intimate moment,” Ashanti revealed that the proposal took place at home, catching her completely off guard.
“I definitely had one of his T-shirts and his boxers on,” she stated, adding that despite having a feeling the proposal was coming, she didn’t expect it then.
When Nelly, 49, finally popped the question, Ashanti, 43, was overwhelmed with emotions. According to her, she was “overjoyed and shocked and surprised and happy.”
As for the wedding plans, Ashanti has already envisioned her perfect day but is in no rush to walk down the aisle.
“We’re both extremely busy, obviously with the baby coming, everything else takes the back seat,” she explained. She did mention having a specific month in mind but kept the details under wraps. What she did reveal is her dream for the wedding – a blend of fashion, glam, and Caribbean vibes.
“I have to have a beach, an ocean, sunshine, palm trees!” she exclaimed.
Ashanti and Nelly’s love story began in 2003 when they met at a Grammys press conference. They dated for 10 years before breaking up in 2013. However, there was never any animosity between them during their time apart. The couple unexpectedly reunited in 2021 during Ja Rule and Fat Joe’s Verzuz battle, and two years later, they confirmed their rekindled romance.
In April, Ashanti announced both her pregnancy and engagement to Essence, expressing her excitement for the future.
“This new year of my life is such a blessing full of love, hope, and anticipation,” she said, adding, “Motherhood is something that I have looked forward to, and sharing this with my family, fiancé, and loyal fans, who have been so supportive of my career, is an amazing experience.”
Throughout their relationship, Ashanti and Nelly have also collaborated musically. In 2009, Ashanti appeared in Nelly’s Body on Me music video, and more recently, they worked together on Jermaine Dupri’s This Lil’ Game We Play.
