Aly Michalka Talks Pregnancy And Why She Delayed Breaking The News To Sister AJ
Aly Michalka experienced a whirlwind of emotions on one of the most important days of her musical career. On the day she found out she was pregnant, Aly and her sister AJ Michalka, who perform together as Aly & AJ, had one of their biggest concerts at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
Reflecting on this pivotal moment during an episode of the Informed Pregnancy Podcast with Dr. Elliot Berlin, released on June 27, Aly shared the unique blend of excitement and anticipation she felt.
Despite the monumental news, Aly, 35, chose to keep her pregnancy a secret for a few days. “I chose not to tell AJ because I really wanted her to be in the moment that evening,” she shared.
“It was hard for me to be in the moment in a way because I was thinking of that while I was on stage. I also was waiting on our show and what was going on that evening, so I didn’t say anything to anybody,” she added.
A few days later, Aly and her husband Stephen Ringer took AJ, 33, to dinner in Los Angeles to share the joyful news. AJ was reportedly thrilled to learn she was going to be an aunt.
Reflecting on the timing of her discovery that she was expecting a baby, Aly said, “It was cool to find out in retrospect because that was such a big deal for us as a band to play that show and to be from L.A. and to have seen so many shows at the Greek.”
Aly did the podcast interview when she was 35 weeks pregnant. She welcomed her son, Jack Francis, on Sunday, April 21.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, she shared details about her home birth in Santa Barbara, California.
“It was a very peaceful and calm birth, which is really what we were hoping for,” Aly said. She named her son after her late grandfather on her mom’s side and described him as “a great little guy.”
When asked why she chose to give birth at home, Aly explained, “I do feel like our medical system intervenes in ways that can be really harmful for women and really traumatic for not only themselves, but for their baby. For me, it felt like a great way to be able to avoid that.”
