Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon Admits She’s Not A Taylor Swift Fan
At 71, Sonic Youth rocker Kim Gordon isn’t shy about her opinions. In a recent interview with The Guardian, she revealed that Taylor Swift’s music isn’t really her thing. Despite Taylor’s global popularity, Kim admitted she isn’t very familiar with the Grammy winner’s work.
When asked about her “most controversial pop culture opinion,” Kim said, “I don’t know if it’s controversial, but I’m not really a fan of Taylor Swift.”
She added, “I couldn’t tell you what her music sounded like, actually.”
Instead, she prefers the music of Billie Eilish when it comes to pop icons.
One thing Kim does acknowledge about Taylor is her diary-like lyricism. In a February interview with The Guardian, she drew a comparison between her writing style and the Bad Blood singer.
“Sure I’m journalling, just like Taylor Swift,” Kim said, adding, “But you know, I’m not writing about sad things. Well, I guess a little sad. There is something about that kind of writing that’s powerful. It’s something you can do right now.”
However, Kim also expressed doubts about ever opening for Taylor on tour. “I don’t know. Because I don’t think her audience would like it. It has to be a little bit of a fit. Even when Sonic Youth toured with Neil Young, it was really hard, seeing hippies sitting there giving you the finger,” she explained.
In a lighter moment, Kim shared an amusing anecdote about being on a plane with Taylor’s fans. “Also, I couldn’t tell you what her music sounds like, but I was on a plane with all her fans recently on the way to Utah and they were all wearing merch. That I quite like. I think I’d just take a sweatshirt,” she shared.
Meanwhile, Taylor is currently dazzling audiences across Europe with her record-breaking Eras Tour. After wrapping up three shows in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, from July 17 to 19, she’ll be performing in Poland, Austria, and England through August 20. She will then head back to North America for a second leg of the tour in October.
