Sabrina Carpenter Tells Story Of How She Had To Fight For Release Of Hit Song “Espresso”
Sabrina Carpenter is riding high on the success of her hit song Espresso, but it wasn’t an easy journey. In a cover story interview with Variety on August 6, the pop star revealed the challenges she faced in getting the song released.
“I was completely alone in wanting to release ‘Espresso.’ Not so much from my immediate team. But when it came to ‘the powers above,’” she shared.
“There was a lot of questioning behind whether it made sense,” she added.
Despite the doubts, Sabrina’s persistence paid off. “But they trusted me in the end, and I was happy that I believed in myself at that moment,” she said further.
Espresso quickly became a chart-topping sensation, securing Sabrina her first top-five spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 and reaching No. 1 in the U.K., Ireland, and Australia.
Reflecting on its success, Sabrina told Rolling Stone in June, “My mom has been like, ‘Do you feel crazy right now?’ I just love that people get my sense of humor.”
The song’s catchy chorus and unique inspiration story add to its charm. Sabrina revealed that it was inspired by a visit to a crêperie in France, which led to the creation of the infectious tune. “I decided to put that burden on other people,” she teased, unapologetic about the song’s appeal.
Working with songwriters Steph Jones and Amy Allen, along with producer Julian Bunetta, was crucial to the song’s development. “That’s the only way those borderline idiotic-slash-funniest lyrics can happen. I’ve really honed in on the people that I love making music with,” the 25-year-old singer stated
Following the song’s success, Sabrina announced a collaboration with Van Leeuwen for an espresso-flavored ice cream, launched on June 28. She excitedly posted on social media, “Available starting JUNE 28th!!!!!” alongside a photo of her holding the ice cream carton featuring the single’s cover art. She playfully captioned another photo showcasing the treat’s swirl with a nod to her lyrics: “It is that sweet.”
Fans have even more to look forward to with the release of Sabrina’s sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet, set to drop on August 23.
