Nina Dobrev Shares Update On Recovery After Dirt Bike Accident
Nina Dobrev is making significant progress as she recovers from a serious dirt bike accident that occurred in May. The 35-year-old actress provided an update on her healing journey while attending the Shiseido Blue Project’s 4th Annual Beach Clean-Up in Huntington Beach, California, on August 7.
“I think I’m doing pretty well,” Nina told PEOPLE.
Revealing that doctors were “pretty surprised” at her rapid recovery, she stated, “I’m a little ahead of schedule in terms of healing, but it is still a very long process.”
The Vampire Diaries star revealed that she tore her ACL, meniscus, and fractured her tibial plateau during the accident, which required a lengthy recovery period. “I didn’t realize it meant nine months to a year of recovery. So I’m only on month, maybe three and a half now,” she said.
Despite feeling ahead of schedule, Nina remains cautious. As she stated; “So there’s still a ways to go. And a lot of times at this point in the healing process, people get re-injured because they feel fine. And so they start doing normal things. So I have to kind of remind myself that I’m still healing and there’s still a little bit of time to go.”
Nina also shared how supportive her boyfriend, former professional snowboarder and skateboarder Shaun White, has been throughout her recovery. The couple recently returned from the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games, where Shaun made sure Nina was comfortable.
“All those streets are closed, so you have to walk from venue to venue and do all these things. And so he prearranged to have a wheelchair there so that I wouldn’t have to walk as much. We had my canes and he was there by my side taking care of me the whole time,” Nina shared.
Nina and Shaun, who first met briefly in 2012 but were formally introduced in 2019, made their relationship known to the public on Instagram in April 2020. The couple was spotted leaving the Ritz Hotel in Paris on July 28, the same day Nina shared an Instagram update filled with clever puns.
“Glad I don’t KNEE’D those crutches anymore. They finally got me Christopher WALKen. Okay, dad jokes aside… ‘Brace yourself’ this is a long video and even longer caption. Last one 😂🫣,” she wrote.
Inspired by Olympian Lindsey Vonn, who recently opened up about her knee surgery, Nina felt encouraged to share her own story. “Since I started walking & traveling a bit, I’ve been feeling much more positive. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel💫,” she wrote.
