Rob Brydon Gets Emotional Over Final “Gavin and Stacey” Script: “Moved to Tears”
Rob Brydon, beloved for his role as Uncle Bryn on the iconic sitcom Gavin and Stacey, has shared how the script for the show’s final episode left him in tears. The 59-year-old actor opened up about the emotional journey as the beloved BBC series gears up for its highly anticipated return.
Fans of the show were thrilled when co-creators James Corden and Ruth Jones announced in July that “Gavin and Stacey” would be making a comeback. The show, which originally aired for three seasons from 2007 to 2010, will return with a special episode on Christmas Day 2024, after a five-year hiatus.
Speaking with Chris Evans on BBC Radio, Rob revealed just how deeply the final script touched him. “Do you know what? I was moved to tears because it’s emotional,” he admitted. Rob went on to say that, although the cast had known the show would return, they were sworn to secrecy for months. “It’s a horrible feeling, because you don’t want to lie to somebody right in the face,” he confessed.
Rob first read the script while on holiday about a month ago, and he couldn’t help but share parts of it with his wife, even though it was supposed to remain a secret.
“It was a couple of months before the cast saw the script. I only saw it, we were on holiday, we were away, about a month ago. I read it. Oh, it’s so good,” he stated.
When asked by Chris Evans if he was simply saying the script was great because he had to, Rob was quick to set the record straight. “No, I kind of wouldn’t, actually. I don’t want to tempt fate, but I think it’s fantastic,” he said with genuine enthusiasm.
As fans eagerly await the Christmas special, there’s also buzz about the outcome of the cliffhanger proposal between Nessa (played by Ruth Jones) and Smithy (played by James Corden). James himself has been hard at work on the script, despite juggling other commitments like his role in The Constituent at the Old Vic and Ruth’s performance in Sister Act on the West End.
James provided an update during an interview on Capital Breakfast, sharing that the final script was in the process of being finalized with some last-minute rewrites. “It’s written right, but now we’re doing rewrites. So, we have to, we have to remove some time, we have to change some bits around,” he explained.
With filming set to begin soon, James and Ruth have been squeezing in writing sessions wherever they can, often in dressing rooms between their stage performances. “…We start shooting pretty soon now. It’s not far away,” James said, adding that he hopes the script will be fully finished by Friday.
