Swifties Spot Easter Egg In Taylor Swift’s VMAs UFO Dress, Calling It The “Down Bad Dress”
Taylor Swift knows how to make an entrance — and she certainly didn’t disappoint at the 2024 MTV VMAs. The pop superstar rocked not just one, but two show-stopping outfits, leaving fans buzzing over her wardrobe choices.
When Taylor first hit the red carpet at UBS Arena in New York on September 11, she arrived in a striking Dior ensemble. The Blank Space singer stunned in a yellow plaid bustier top with an attached skirt, paired with black velvet hot pants and caged leather gloves. To complete the look, she continued her streak of wearing thigh-high boots, this time opting for Stuart Weitzman’s $1,200 Maverick boots, which are currently sold out. Her bold glam look included messy, textured waves, side-swept bangs, and a dramatic departure from her signature red lip.
Of course, Taylor was also dripping in jewels. She sported 30-carat Lorraine Schwartz pear-shaped canary yellow diamond earrings, encased in black jade, perfectly complementing her yellow plaid ensemble.
But Taylor being Taylor, one outfit simply wasn’t enough. Once inside the event, she changed into a custom blue-and-green beaded minidress by Monse, complete with leather straps and a gathered skirt. The eye-catching detail? A beaded UFO right in the center of her chest — an Easter egg that Swifties quickly linked to her song Down Bad from her latest album The Tortured Poets Department.
Fans on social media were quick to dub it the “Down Bad dress,” recognizing the UFO motif as a nod to the song’s lyrics, which Taylor previously explained in an iHeartRadio interview. She shared that the track is about feeling “love bombed” and compared the experience to being abducted by aliens. “Like this girl is abducted by aliens but she wanted to stay with them,” Taylor explained, adding, “And then they drop her off back in her hometown. She’s like, ‘Wait, no. Where are you going? I liked it there, it was weird but it was cool, come back.'”
Taylor’s fashion choices weren’t the only thing getting attention that night. The singer was nominated for a whopping 10 awards, including Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration with Post Malone for Fortnight — both of which she took home. Post Malone was right behind her with nine nominations, making it a tight race for the night’s biggest awards.
