Adam Brody Settles The “Gilmore Girls” Boyfriend Debate: Was Dave the Best?
Adam Brody is weighing in on one of Gilmore Girls’ most talked-about debates: who deserves the title of best boyfriend on the show?
Adam, now 44, stole fans’ hearts back in season 3 of Gilmore Girls as Dave Rygalski, the sweet and charming guitarist who pursued Lane Kim, played by Keiko Agena. Despite his short stint on the show, Dave’s dedication to Lane, including the unforgettable moment when he read the entire Bible just to get her mom’s approval for prom, made viewers swoon.
But according to Adam, Dave might not deserve the title of “best boyfriend” after all. In a recent Instagram video posted by ELLE Magazine, the actor candidly addressed the conversation. “No, he wasn’t around that long,” Brody admitted, adding, “We don’t know how he would have been in the long term. He could have been love bombing.”
Dave’s love story with Lane was brief but memorable. In season 3, he famously stayed up all night reading the Bible to impress Mrs. Kim, Lane’s strict, religious mother, just so he could take Kim to prom. Though Mrs. Kim eventually agreed, Dave and Lane’s romance didn’t last, as he went off to college in California. They tried a long-distance relationship but eventually broke up, leaving Lane to later marry her bandmate Zack Van Gerbig (played by actor Todd Lowe) and start a family.
Even though Dave left Gilmore Girls early, fans never forgot him. And neither did Agena, who, in a previous interview with E! News, confessed that she believes Lane still thinks about Dave from time to time.
“As rock ‘n roll as she said she was, I think she would be pretty above board, but I think there is some lovelorn heartsickness over that relationship. Maybe some daydreams. I don’t know that she would ever act on anything, but a friendship for sure,” Agena shared.
Though Dave’s time in Gilmore Girls was short, Adam’s performance clearly left a lasting impact on fans. And while he may not claim the title of “best boyfriend,” his portrayal of Dave remains a fan-favorite moment in the show’s history.
Gilmore Girls may have wrapped up in 2007, but the show remains a beloved classic, now streaming on Netflix alongside Adam’s latest project, Nobody Wants This.
