Elton John On His “Astonishing Life”: “I’ve Never Felt Happiness Like This Before”
Elton John is reflecting on his legendary career, and fans got a special surprise during the U.S. premiere of his new documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late. On October 1, at the New York Film Festival, the 77-year-old music icon took to the stage to perform his classic hit Tiny Dancer, mesmerizing the audience with his voice and piano skills. Dressed in a stylish black-and-white suit, Elton wasn’t just there to sing; he also shared some heartfelt thoughts on his journey through life and music.
“There’s always been music through the good times and the bad times,” Elton said to the crowd. “I’ve always relied on music to pull me through. Even when I was in my darkest times, I still played music, I still recorded music, so I have to say thank you to music for being the most incredible inspiration to me throughout my whole life.”
The documentary, which had its world premiere in September at the Toronto International Film Festival, gives fans a deep look into Elton’s extraordinary life, from his early days as a struggling musician to his final performance at Dodgers Stadium in November 2022. With a blend of unseen archival footage and his biggest hits, the film takes viewers on a journey through the highs and lows of his career, including his battle with addiction, personal struggles, and eventual triumph.
Elton didn’t hold back when discussing the emotional journey he’s been on. “When I first became successful in those first five years, it was wonderful. It was all I wanted. I wanted people to love the songs, buy the records,” he shared.
“In 1990, I got sober, and when that happened, I began to understand what was missing from my life: humility, gratitude, and faith. I had to build a foundation. Yes, music is wonderful. Fame is wonderful. But it didn’t satisfy me. Something was missing. So eventually, I found complete and utter happiness and bliss when I met David and when I had my children,” he said further.
His husband, David Furnish, who co-directed the documentary alongside R.J. Cutler, was by his side for the event, and the love and support between them was clear. Elton wrapped up his speech by saying, “I’m 77 years of age, I’ve done all there is to do, and yet I’ve never felt the kind of happiness I feel now.”
The documentary isn’t just a celebration of Elton’s career; it’s a raw and intimate look at his personal struggles, his iconic friendship with Bernie Taupin, and his rise to becoming one of the most celebrated figures in music history. Highlights include his famous performance at the Troubadour Club in 1970, his collaboration with John Lennon, and his songwriting process for hits like Tiny Dancer.
Fans can also look forward to appearances from some of Elton’s friends and collaborators, including Bernie Taupin, John Lennon, and even Dua Lipa, who played a key role in his recent musical renaissance. The film also features a brand-new song from the five-time Grammy winner, adding another chapter to his already impressive discography.
