Matt Smith Jokes About His “Targaryen Wig Struggles” — And Might Have Found A Way Out!
Matt Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen on House of the Dragon, knows he’s got it good as a Targaryen. But there’s one thing he’s struggling with more than battling dragons: those iconic Targaryen wigs.
During a panel at New York Comic Con on October 20, alongside his House of the Dragon costars Tom Glynn-Carney and Fabien Frankel, the 41-year-old actor revealed that managing the wigs has been one of the hardest parts of the job. “The wigs are hard,” he admitted, as Glynn-Carney, who plays Aegon Targaryen, immediately chimed in to agree, adding that “the wigs, the bald caps, [and] the pins” all contribute to the daily struggles.
But what’s really got Matt fired up is that he might have found a better solution! While working on the set of Caught Stealing in New York City, where he stars alongside Austin Butler, he discovered there could be an easier way to deal with the wig situation.
“I’ve been talking to the makeup people there, going, ‘Is there a way around it?’ And they’re like, ‘There is,’” he shared, to the shock of Glynn-Carney, 29, who looked intrigued by the possibility of less wig-related stress in the future.
Matt seemed ready to bring his newfound knowledge back to House of the Dragon, joking, “I’m going back armed, man. I’ll tell you.”
His costar Fabien, who plays the character Ser Criston Cole, playfully pointed out that Matt might already be halfway to a solution. Sporting a nearly bald look for his role in Caught Stealing — complete with a colorful mullet — Matt seemed to have a lightbulb moment. “Oh, I’m just gonna shave my head,” he quipped, as Fabien admitted that’s what he had done for his own character, Ser Criston Cole.
Matt, however, wasn’t entirely sure if he could go through another season of wig torture. “I can’t go through it again. I can’t. It killed me,” he joked, before adding, “Sorry—these are champagne problems, aren’t they?”
The panel wasn’t just all about wigs, though. The actors also spoke briefly about the highly anticipated third season of House of the Dragon, but it seems even they are in the dark about what’s next. Matt stated that he has “not heard hide nor hair” about the plot after the season 2 finale, which aired on Aug. 4.
Tom echoed the sentiment, humorously saying, “Not a jot, not a letter,” and joked that the longer the show’s creators take, the less the actors have to read for a while.
However, Fabien had a bit more fun with it, teasing that he’s heard some things but couldn’t share them just yet.
For fans eagerly awaiting the next season, both season 1 and 2 of House of the Dragon are available to stream on Max.
