Property Brothers Share Heartwarming Story Behind Parents’ Move From Their Dream Home In Canada To Los Angeles
Drew and Jonathan Scott, the stars of HGTV’s Don’t Hate Your House with the Property Brothers, recently shared the heartfelt reason why their parents, Jim and Joanne Scott, left their beloved home in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. After decades in their dream home, they relocated to Los Angeles to be closer to their sons and their expanding family.
“They’re leaving their dreams,” Drew shared in an interview with PEOPLE. “Up in the Rocky Mountains, they had this killer view. They’ve lived their whole lives there — 60 years together. This has been where they first met, and where they were before they moved down here.”
Now, the Scotts’ parents are trading those mountain views for the joy of living near their grandchildren.
Jonathan explained that they’d already renovated their parents’ beautiful mountain home, which they loved. But the lure of family time, especially with the grandkids, brought them south. “We couldn’t have them move down here to be closer to family and hate where they live,” Drew said.
That’s why the Scott brothers are making sure their parents’ new Spanish-style bungalow feels like a true home.
Viewers will get a front-row seat to the renovation in the last two episodes of Don’t Hate Your House, which premiered on November 13. Drew added that the pressure was on to make the home perfect. “You don’t want to disappoint your mom — that’s the most important thing,” Jonathan agreed, noting how even at 90, their dad, Jim, was right there in the mix, swinging a sledgehammer to help with the remodel.
Along with renovating their parents’ house, Drew and Jonathan also work with families who want to reimagine their homes rather than move. In Don’t Hate Your House, the Property Brothers work with families who are frustrated by their home layouts, transforming their spaces to be both beautiful and functional.
Drew, who shares two young children with his wife Linda Phan, and Jonathan, who is a stepdad to fiancée Zooey Deschanel’s children, understand how much family matters — especially when it’s close to home. As Drew put it, they were nervous about how their parents would react to the new house, but he teased that viewers “have to watch the show to find out” if they do.
