Kelly Clarkson Surprises Fans With A Country Twist On Sabrina Carpenter’s Hit “Please Please Please”
Kelly Clarkson just turned up the country charm on Sabrina Carpenter’s smash hit Please Please Please during her popular Kellyoke segment on The Kelly Clarkson Show, leaving fans swooning and begging for an official release. The Grammy-winning singer took the song to a whole new level, inspired by none other than Dolly Parton.
As Kelly, 42, wrapped up her heartfelt rendition, she shared her excitement with the audience. “That was ‘Please Please Please’ by Sabrina Carpenter. It’s her first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, which I found shocking!” she said, surprised that such a catchy tune was Sabrina’s first chart-topper.
Kelly continued, “I thought she would’ve had other ones, but I was like, ‘Well, that’s incredible!’”
Kelly explained that from the moment she heard Sabrina’s track, she felt it had a country spirit hidden in its notes, channeling the legendary Dolly herself. “Ever since I heard this song, for some reason I hear Dolly Parton singing it as well. It just lends itself to country to me, so I asked my band if we could make more of a country version of it, ‘cause we have the amazing pop version already.”
The song, which was originally produced by Jack Antonoff, hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 shortly after its release in June as part of Sabrina’s album Short n’ Sweet. It even earned a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year, making waves across genres. Sabrina’s previous single, Espresso, had already given fans a taste of her dynamic range, but Please Please Please quickly captured hearts and playlists, staying at the top.
Shortly after its release, Sabrina’s close friend, actress Joey King, raved about the track in an interview with PEOPLE. “I’m so happy for her and I just can’t stop singing ‘Please Please Please’… get out of my head,” Joey stated, adding, “It’s so rude of her to make a hit like that.”
Referencing the viral video starring Barry Keoghan, Joey further said, “It’s also so rude to make such an addicting music video. I watched it six times at 2:00 a.m. when I wanted to go to bed!”
Kelly’s performance has fans eagerly hoping for an official recording of her country-inspired version. After all, as the Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You) singer herself said, “I love when a song is so good that you can take it into different genres.” And it looks like her fans agree!
