How Fortune Feimster’s Mom Got Jealous Of Her Wife
Fortune Feimster is turning her life’s quirks into comedy gold once again in her upcoming Netflix special, Fortune Feimster: Crushing It. The 44-year-old comedian, known for her relatable humor, offers a hilarious take on love, family, and the chaos that ensues when they overlap.
In a sneak peek shared by PEOPLE, Fortune opens up about a surprising twist in her relationship with her wife, Jacquelyn “Jax” Smith: her mom’s unexpected jealousy. “Something happened when I met Jax that I did not expect. My mom got a little jealous,” Fortune shares, prompting laughter from the crowd.
Fortune recounts a particularly memorable moment when a simple gift for Jax — a scarf — sparked competition. “…My mom would be like, ‘I like scarves.’ I’m like, ‘You’re not my girlfriend,’” she jokes.
The plot thickens in February, a month that brings double the stress for Fortune. Her mom’s birthday falls just five days after Jax’s, turning what should be a time of love into a comedic minefield. Recalling her early days with Jax, she explains how a heartfelt Facebook tribute for her wife backfired.
He had posted a collage with 30 pictures of Jax for her birthday. But when her mom’s birthday rolled around, things took a turn. Fortune then called her mom and said, ‘I’m on Facebook. I was looking at my messages, and I don’t see one from you, and I know your thumbs work because you used them five days ago.”
In Crushing It, Fortune doesn’t just mine family drama for laughs; she dives into themes of relationships and personal growth, all while staying true to her unique comedic voice. Directed by Kristian Mercado Figueroa, the special builds on the success of her previous hits, Good Fortune (2022) and Sweet & Salty (2020).
Beyond the stage, Fortune and Jax share a life filled with love, laughter, and their adorable Pomeranian, Biggie. The couple, who met in 2015, got engaged in 2018 and married in 2020. Jax has even taken on the role of executive producer for Fortune’s comedy specials.
“I want people to know me and Jax are like everybody else,” Fortune told PEOPLE while promoting Good Fortune.
“We happen to be gay, but our story is not much different from other people’s.” She added, “ I want the special to be something everyone can relate to. You don’t have to be gay to relate to an engagement story.”
