Cameron Diaz Spills Secrets To A Strong Marriage With Benji Madden
Cameron Diaz is keeping it real about what makes her marriage to Benji Madden work. During an appearance on her brother-in-law Joel Madden’s Artist Friendly podcast on December 11, the actress credited one crucial practice: therapy.
“Therapy is a big thing in our family. It’s what we depend on,” Cameron, 52, said, laughing.
Joel, who has been married to Nicole Richie since 2010, couldn’t agree more. “Big time,” the Good Charlotte rocker, 45, chimed in.
For Cameron, therapy helps couples build the tools they need to navigate challenges. As she explained, it’s about having that commitment to work on the relationship.
Instead of repeating the same mistakes, therapy encourages partners to ask tough questions: “Why didn’t it work? How can I make it work? What’s my part? What’s the other person’s work?”
Cameron believes this approach makes a huge difference. By working through conflicts with a professional, couples can “go into the next attempt a little bit more equipped to hopefully come out with a different outcome.”
The Back in Action star also emphasized the importance of equal effort in a marriage. “You can’t be in a marriage and have a family if both people are not 100 percent every day,” she said.
“Even if you’re mad at each other, don’t want to see each other, sick of each other, it’s still 100 percent commitment to the marriage and to the partnership and the family,” she added.
That commitment doesn’t mean the pair always sees eye to eye. Cameron joked that she often reminds Benji, “I’m not your twin… You can’t finish my sentences. You don’t know what I’m thinking.”
For Joel, watching his twin brother marry Cameron was a life-changing moment and “the best thing that ever happened to him.”
“Yeah, it is,” Cameron responded with a laugh. But she added on a more serious note, “It’s the thing that I’m most grateful for in my life, is our marriage and our family. Period. That’s it.”
Cameron and Benji, both 45, share two children, Raddix and Cardinal, and have kept much of their family life private. The Artist Friendly interview marked the podcast’s milestone 100th episode, offering fans a rare glimpse into the couple’s relationship.
On the work front, Cameron is busier than ever. She’s currently filming Outcome, a dark comedy directed by Jonah Hill, which will reunite her with Feeling Minnesota co-star Keanu Reeves. Fans can also catch her alongside Jamie Foxx, Glenn Close, and Andrew Scott in Back in Action, premiering on Netflix on January 17, 2025.
