Sara Bareilles Celebrates Fiancé Joe Tippett’s Sobriety Milestone With Heartfelt Tribute
Sara Bareilles is ringing in the new year with pride and gratitude as she celebrates a significant milestone in her fiancé Joe Tippett’s life. On January 1st, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter marked Joe’s impressive achievement of nine years of sobriety with a touching Instagram tribute.
“Nine years sobriety. So proud of this man,” Sara, 45, wrote while resharing Joe’s heartfelt message about his journey. Joe, 42, reflected on his accomplishment in his own post, writing, “It has been nine years since my last drink…”
This milestone comes just two years after Sara announced their engagement on New Year’s Day in 2023. At the time, she shared her joy with fans on Instagram, writing, “Yes to marrying this man. It’s an easy, earned, relaxed YES.”
In a candid interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers in March 2023, Sara shared the sweet — and slightly comedic — story of their engagement. Joe had proposed during a spontaneous moment but forgot one important detail: the engagement ring.
“Yeah … It was a spontaneous moment and so, in spontaneous times, sometimes you forget elements, and he did forget the ring,” Sara said, laughing. But Joe quickly redeemed himself. “But it was just downstairs in the hotel room! So he asked me and I said yes, and then he said, ‘I’ll be right back!’”
The couple, who met in 2015 while working together on the Broadway musical Waitress, have been inseparable ever since. Joe later revealed more about the proposal during the premiere of Waitress, The Musical – Live on Broadway! at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2023.
The magical moment took place in Mexico City, on a rooftop at sunset. “We were up on a roof at sunset, the sky was on fire and we were listening to music and slow dancing, and it was like, ‘OK, now!’” Joe recalled. After Sara said yes, Joe realized he had forgotten the ring. “I have to go down and get it!” he said.
The initial ring wasn’t extravagant — just a simple piece they found at a local market. But for Joe and Sara, it was perfect for that moment. Later, Joe upgraded the ring to a beautiful gold piece he found “at an antique store.”
